Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Case 1

Gunshot wound with stellate blow back lacerations. In contact gunshot wounds with bony tissue underlying the injury, the injuries are typically called a stellate wound, where the gases exit the barrel before the projectile. As a result, the gas collides with the bone tissue, resulting in the reflection of the gases. This gas causes the expansion of subcutaneous space and pressure, which results in an explosive injury, tearing, and lacerating the skin and subcutaneous tissue, resulting in the stellate wound. Additionally, the expanding gases also cause a back-splatter of soft-tissue and blood onto the firearm and fingers.

This man has been decapitated, no further info. Decapitation is the total separation of the head from the body. Such an injury is inevitably fatal to humans and most other animals, since it deprives the brain of oxygenated blood, while all other organs are deprived of the involuntary functions that are needed for the body to function. Dismemberment of a corpse has always been viewed by society to be a more hideous crime than the homicide itself. The perpetrators of criminal corpse dismemberment act mostly with the aim of facilitating body removal, covering up the traces of the crime, and hindering identification (defensive mutilation). More rarely, they are motivated by other factors: aggression against the victim, expressed after the individual’s death (aggressive mutilation); dismemberment that accompanies lust murders or necrosadistic murders (offensive mutilation); as well as winning a trophy or a fetish (necromaniac mutilation). In defensive mutilations, the perpetrator divides the body of the victim into pieces that allow for transporting the corpse and concealing it where it will not be noticed. In the majority of cases, the head and extremities are cut off the trunk, or the body is cut in halves across the trunk.

Germany. The decapitated body of a 78-year-old woman was found in her flat by relatives, her severed head being separated from the body and lying next to her. Next to the severed head, a long knife was found. Medicolegal autopsy revealed signs of vital strangling, namely petechial hemorrhages of the conjunctivae, mouth mucosa, and behind the ears, left-sided fracture of the hyoid bone, and fracture of the left upper horn of the thyroid cartilage with surrounding hemorrhage, as well as hemorrhages of the ventral neck muscles.

Several abdominal and thoracic stab wounds were also present, with injuries to the liver, the stomach, and the heart. These wounds only exhibited very discrete surrounding hemorrhage. The wound margins of the disconnected head and neck were clear-cut, with several sharp-angled ends; the vertebral column was cut through between the fourth and fifth cervical vertebra. No corresponding vital reactions were found, identifying decapitation as postmortem mutilation. Death was attributed to strangling.

Case 4

This individual has a fatal crushing head injury, no further info. Deaths resulting from blunt force trauma are some of the most common cases encountered by the practicing forensic pathologist. Whereas other forms of traumatic death (eg, gunshot wounds, sharp force injuries) occur under a relatively limited number of circumstances, deaths resulting from blunt force trauma occur in a variety of scenarios. For instance, almost all transportation fatalities—including those involving motor vehicle collisions, pedestrians being struck by vehicles, airplane crashes, and boating incidents—result from blunt force trauma. Other deaths resulting from blunt force trauma involve jumping or falling from heights, blast injuries, and being struck by a firm object, such as a fist, crowbar, bat, or ball. Bite wounds and chop injuries may be considered variants of blunt force trauma, sharp force trauma, or a class of injuries unto themselves.

This individual was found in a state of decomposition. No further info about this case. Decomposition is the process in which the organs and complex molecules of a human body break down into simple organic matter over time. In vertebrates, five stages of decomposition are typically recognized: fresh, bloat, active decay, advanced decay, and dry/skeletonized. Burial slows down the rate of decomposition, in part because even a few inches of soil covering the corpse will prevent blowflies from laying their eggs on the corpse. The depth of burial, the nature of the soil, and the temperature and moisture content of the soil all affect decay.

This victim was inhaling an unknown chemical substance while practicing autoerotic activities. Autoerotic death refers to the accidental death of individuals of either sex due to failure of devices, or unexpected effects of materials, that were being used to enhance the sexual experience. Although asphyxia from hanging has been described most frequently, a wide variety of other lethal situations have been reported. As there is great variability in the number and types of sexual aids that may be used by individuals, careful death scene examination is essential in helping to exclude suicide and more rarely homicide. The clandestine nature of this paraphilia may, however, make subsequent identification and diagnosis difficult unless the death scene features are typical. This is particularly so in the rare cases involving women.

Case 6 looks a lot like he was huffing difluoroethane, more commonly known as "Dust-Off."

It was a prevalent problem around 15-20 years ago. Unfortunately, I'm very familiar with several accidental deaths involving young teens and adults who abused the stuff. So many people were dropping dead that manufacturers added strong aversive agents and bitterants to try to prevent abuse.

Abusing inhalants like this can lead to “sudden sniffing death” by causing fatal heart failure even the first time it is tried. Dust-Off disrupts normal heart rhythm, which leads to heart rate irregularities that can be life-threatening. NIDA reports that between 100 and 200 people die every year in the US from sudden death caused by inhalant abuse.
