The Shocker's Mix 43

Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Fig1.1 Clothing on a drowning victim will alter the buoyancy and the progression of decomposition.

Clothing on a drowning victim will alter the buoyancy and the progression of decomposition. It may also be misleading as in this case where an item of clothing has the appearance of a blindfold. If a body of water is the primary death scene and the body has been immersed for only a short period of time, the position of the body will be affected by clothing and any personal effects on the body. If the individual has drowned, typically the body will initially submerge and assume what has been called the “drowning position.” This is where the anterior aspect of the individual faces the bottom of the body of the water and the extremities and head hang downward toward the bottom while the individual's back is toward the surface.

Fig2.1 Typical postmortem changes combined with mud and debris.

Typical postmortem changes combined with mud and debris as well as sloughing of the skin of the hands and feet are typical for bodies recovered from the water. Perhaps the most well-known external change that immersion in liquid has on the body is wrinkling of the skin, particularly involving the hands and feet. Traditionally this has been called “washerwoman's hands” or “washerwoman's changes,” though a better designation on the autopsy report would be cutaneous changes of immersion. Cutis anserina or goose flesh is another cutaneous change of immersion and is caused by rigor of the erector pilli muscles within the skin. Both of these changes, wrinkling and cutis anserina, will occur as a postmortem change and do not require the individual to be alive upon entering the water. The usual postmortem changes of vascular marbling, dark discoloration of skin and soft tissue, bloating, and putrefaction occur in the water as they do on land though at a different rate, particularly in cold water. Sloughing of the skin, particularly involving the hands and feet, is common with prolonged immersion

Fig3.1 Rapid skeletonization of remains due to water temperature and carnivorous fish species.

Brazil. Rapid skeletonization of remains may occur in bodies of water in tropical areas due to water temperature and carnivorous fish species. This individual reportedly went missing only a few days prior to recovery. Examples of rapid skeletonization of remains have been noted in tropical waters where carnivorous predators are abundant, such as the Amazon region of South America. In the ocean, several species of sharks and other large carnivorous fish commonly feed on human remains. Large portions of human tissue, including entire extremities, have been recovered from the stomachs of sharks with some frequency. Sharks possess several rows of teeth and commonly, the teeth may be recovered from a bite wound. In most cases it will be concluded that the shark fed on the remains after the individual was deceased.

Fig5.1 Avulsion and raccoon eyes.

Avulsion laceration produced from a shearing-type force, with a resultant ‘flap’ of torn & undermined tissue. Raccoon eyes also known as bruising around the eyes or periorbital hematoma or periorbital bruising (ecchymosis) with tarsal plate sparing, is a sign of basal skull fracture. Raccoon eyes results from blood from skull fracture tracking down into the soft tissue around the eye. Raccoon eyes may also be referred to as panda eyes, especially in the UK.

Fig6.2 Thyroid cartilage can be seen.

This 28-years-old man committed suicide by cutting his throat, he was feeling depressed after a breakup with his girlfriend. No further info. These injuries are usually superficial with multiple hesitation marks. Suicidal and homicidal injuries to the neck are mostly caused by sharp edge weapon. Suicide is one of the three leading causes of death among the persons of age between 15 and 34 years throughout the world. According to the WHO, almost one million people commit suicide and 20 times more people attempt suicide every year. A global mortality rate is 16 per 100.000.

Fig7.1 Intestines forced from the anus following compactor compression.

This person was put in a garbage dumpster and left to decompose. In the garbage truck the trash compactor was engaged before the body was noticed. Note in figure 1 that the intestines were forced from the anus following the compactor compression. Also note the garbage truck shovel laceration to the back in figure 2. Lacerations are tears of the skin, soft tissues, or internal organs or vessels as a result of an impact, overstretching, or crushing-type forces.
