The Shocker's Mix 15
Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational. ________ Case 1  Fig1.1 Beheaded Serb by a Bosnian Al-Qaeda terrorist. A war crimes investigation in Serbia and Republika Srpska of a beheaded Serb by a Bosnian Al-Qaeda terrorist in 1999. A series of war crimes were committed during the Kosovo War (early 1998 – 11 June 1999). The forces of the Slobodan Milošević regime committed rape, killed many Albanian civilians and expelled them during the war, alongside the widespread destruction of civilian, cultural and religious property. According to the Human Rights Watch, the vast majority of the violations from January 1998 to April 1999 were attributable to Serbian police or the Yugoslav army. Violations also included war crimes committed by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA or UÇK), such as kidnappings and summary executions of civilians. In 2014, the Humanitarian Law Center released a list of people killed or gone missing during the war, including 8,661 Kosovo Albanian civilians, 1,797 ethnic Serbs and 447 civilians of other ethnicities such as Romani people and Bosniaks. ________ Case 2  Fig2.1 Postmortem animal predation by a cat. This individual died and was attacked postmortem by a cat, no further info. Postmortem animal depredation is a substantial part of the taphonomic processes a body undergoes after death. While the occurrence and presentation of such injuries are well known to forensic pathologists, the morphological appearance of these injuries may be misinterpreted by police officers or members of other investigating authorities. A broad range of carnivores can be involved in the postmortem destruction of corpses located in open spaces or indoors (e.g. wild animals such as foxes and big cats or domestic animals such as dogs and cats). The wound margins caused by carnivores often appear more regular than those caused by rodents and V-shaped or rhomboid punctured wounds are often seen upon the intact skin in the immediate vicinity to the actual wound margins. Such stab wound-like defects represent canine tooth marks of carnivore origin. An additional criterion for animal depredation by carnivores is the presence of claw-induced linear scratch-type abrasions in the vicinity of the damaged skin areas. In cases with postmortem animal predation, the psychological state of the animal is a possible reason for its behavior. One possible explanation for such behavior is that a pet will try to help an unconscious owner first by licking or nudging, but when this fails to produce any results the behavior of the animal can become more frantic and in a state of panic can lead to biting. The motive is not to attack the owner but is a kind of ‘‘displacement’’ behavior motivated by confusion and fear. The fact that the efforts of the animal will obviously be fruitless explains why this can easily escalate and culminate in excessive mutilation. ________ Case 3  Fig3.1 Top: Left side of neck and face with extensive postmortem hypostasis (lividity). Awareness of the pitfalls and artifacts in the neck is essential for a satisfactory and evidence-based approach to interpreting observations of the neck at autopsy. The postmortem hypostatic hemorrhage is the extravasation of blood into the interstitium when two conditions are met. First, a congested venous plexus is distended with blood due to the gravitational effects of livor mortis. Second, there is loss of vascular integrity of the venous channels due to autolysis or decomposition. When these two factors operate together, the combined effect is the formation of focal perivascular extravasation of blood or extensive interstitial infiltration of blood. The most commonly encountered and trivial examples of this phenomenon are the small, postmortem hemorrhages that occur in the skin in cases of hanging with pronounced lividity in the lower extremities. These postmortem hypostatic petechial hemorrhages (often known as Tardieu spots) are a typical example of postmortem hypostatic hemorrhages. ________ Case 4  Fig4.1 Compound fracture of the left tibia and fibula. The forces necessary to cause skeletal fracture is usually significantly greater but may be dependent on the condition of the bones at the time of impact. Under normal circumstances, significant force is needed to cause fracture to bones such as the long bones of the arms and legs, pelvis, and skull. However, individuals who are malnourished, who are infants or children with genetic bone diseases, or who are elderly, may have weaker bones that are more prone to fracturing with less force or impact. Elderly individuals with advanced osteoporosis may sustain a hip fracture by just simply taking a step while walking upright. Individuals with metastatic cancer may also have weakened bones due to infiltration by cancer, and sustain a pathological fracture with little or no force or impact. Fractures may be visible externally as obvious deformity, sometimes with protrusion through the skin (compound/open fracture), and otherwise illuminated by an x-ray. ________ Case 5  Fig5.1 Multiple fractures of the facial bones with deformity. This individual suffered a fatal head crushing injury, no further info. A crushing brain injury causes damage to the brain, blood vessels, and skull, each of which can be life-threatening: A skull fracture exposes the brain to further damage by robbing the brain of its protective case. Further, fragments of the skull may puncture the brain or blood vessels, causing more damage. ________ Case 6  Fig6.1 Stab wounds of the chest and abdomen. This individual has been stabbed multiple times in the chest and abdomen, the body has been washed at the morgue, no further info. Sharp force injuries are caused by objects with sharp or nearly sharp edges or points, including knives, screwdrivers, scissors, ice picks, broken glass, and axes. The wounds they produce typically have smooth distinct edges and vary in shape, including round, linear, curvilinear, gaping, or slit-like. They can be divided into incised wounds (cuts or slashes), stab wounds, or chop wounds. Stab wounds extend deep into the body and thus are greater in depth than the length on the skin surface, and have a greater propensity to involve injury to the internal organs and blood vessels. The skin has some resistance to penetration, but once breached, especially when the instrument has a very sharp edge, it takes very little perpendicular or obliquely applied force to extend the wound into the underlying tissue and organs, unless bone or cartilage is encountered. ________ Case 7  Fig7.1 Stippling around gunshot entrance wounds of the face.  Fig7.2 Closeup of stippling around gunshot entrance wounds.  Fig7.3 Stippling is caused by unburned powder grains expelled from the barrel. This individual has stippling around the gunshot entrance wounds of the face, intermediate range, no further info. Stippling (or powder tattooing) is red to orange or brownish punctate abrasions surrounding the entrance wounds as a result of pieces of gunpowder expelled from the barrel and striking the skin. Soot deposition is due to the carbon produced by the combustion of the gunpowder that exits the barrel and deposits on the skin surrounding the entrance wound. - This post is for educational purposes only and is nonprofit.
