The Shocker's Mix 8
Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational. - - - Case 1 Fig1.1 Woman amputated and killed after getting hit by train This woman died after getting hit by a train. Her right arm got amputated along with bruising of the face and chest. No further info. Railway injuries are not uncommon, especially in countries with many ‘level crossings’ (called ‘grade crossings’ in the USA), where a public road crosses a railway track with either no barrier at all or with only a flimsy lifting pole. Many vehicles are struck each year by passing locomotives. The other fairly common railway fatality is the suicide who lays himself in front of an approaching train. Decapitation is the most common injury and the obvious features are the local tissue destruction, usually with grease, rust or other dirt soiling of the damaged area. - Case 2 Fig2.1 Contact gunshot wound to the eye Contact gunshot wound to the eye. Note the lacerations of the eyelid and eye globe with soot deposition at the adjacent skin and within the wound track. No backstory. A contact shot is defined as a gunshot wound incurred while the muzzle of the firearm is in direct contact with the body at the moment of discharge. Contact shots are often the result of close range gunfights, suicide, or execution. - Case 3 Fig3.1 Decomposition with bloated facial features Note the bulging eyes, lips and face with protrusion of the tongue on this decomposing individual, all related to the decomposition process. No further info about this case. Decomposition, or putrefaction, is a combination of two processes: autolysis and bacterial action. Autolysis is the breakdown of cells and organs through an aseptic chemical process caused by intracellular enzymes. Because it is a chemical process, it is accelerated by heat, slowed by cold, and stopped by freezing. Bacterial action results in the conversion of soft tissues in the body to liquids and gases. The chemicals produced as a result of putrefaction are cadaverine and putrescine, hydrogen sulfide and other sulfides, which generate a horrible smell. Putrefaction begins immediately upon death and usually becomes noticeable within 24 hours. As soon as death occurs, the bacteria or microorganisms within the intestinal tract escape from the bowel into the other tissues of the body. As they grow, they begin to produce gases and other properties that distort and discolor the tissues of the body. The discoloration is a dark greenish combination of colors and is generally pronounced within 36 hours. As a result, the body begins to swell from the putrefactive gases, emitting an extremely repugnant odor. The rate of decomposition depends on the temperature, ground conditions, amount of clothing, size of the body, etc. For example, a body in a warm climate will not only encourage insect attack from the outside, but will also increase the interior bacteria development and subsequent tissue attack from within. As the tissues inside are destroyed and enzymes released, the gases formed emit a foul and sickening smell. - Case 4 Fig4.1 Suicidal contact wound under the chin from a 7.62 calibre rifle with destruction of the head This victim shot himself under the chin with a 7.62 calibre rifle creating massive tissue destruction, no further info. Head injuries from shotguns and high-powered rifles are typically quite devastating, often with extensive soft tissue destruction, skull fractures, and pulpifaction of the brain. Occasionally, the brain is largely expelled from the cranial vault and may be found near the body. Self-inflicted submental and transoral wounds may produce serious but survivable brain injuries if the path of the bullet is limited to the frontal area. The head is the most common location for a suicidal shotgun wound (74%), followed by the chest (20%) and then the abdomen (6%). In head wounds, the most common location was intraoral (50%), followed by under the chin (19%); side of head, including parietal and temporal wounds (15%); and the face, including the forehead (13%). - Case 5 Fig5.1 Crush laceration of the head Grinding and compression forces can cause crushing injuries of tissues. This form of injury may cause total or partial amputation of the affected body part for example limb. It may also be associated with avulsion and/or stretch laceration. No info on this case. Head trauma from a crushing brain injury occurs when the brain and skull are crushed—usually between two hard objects. The more forceful the crushing is, the more severe damage will be. Head trauma from a crushing brain injury is typically the most damaging and life-threatening variety of traumatic brain injury. - Case 6 Fig6.1 Decomp hanging from a tree This decomposing individual was discovered hanging from a tree. No info. Hanging is a form of violent death produced by suspending the body with a ligature around the neck, the constricting force being the weight of the body or a part of body weight. In hanging the constricting force may be the weight of the entire body as in a complete hanging or part of body weight as in partial hanging. A constriction pressure of 2 kg (4.4 lbs) is sufficient to occlude the jugular venous system causing cerebral venous congestion. A constricting pressure of 5 kg (11 lbs) can compress the carotid arteries causing cessation of blood supply to the brain. A constricting force of 15 kg (33lbs) can compress the trachea causing obstruction to respiration. A constricting force of 30 kg (66lbs) can obstruct the vertebral arteries. Thus it is not necessary that the body should be suspended by ligature completely as in a complete hanging. Even though the body is touching the ground as in partial hanging, the person may succumb to death. - This post is for educational purposes only and is nonprofit. ^^ I agree, Herman has a large stash of goodies. His work is appreciated (TIME, research, statistics, etc). He is definitely a real kool ghoul.
