The Shocker's Mix 93

Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Whether through an accident or intentional act, explosions are an occurrence that can cause serious injury and death. Explosions have the ability to inflict injuries on many people at the same time resulting in high levels of mortality and morbidity. The type and severity of the impact depends on many factors including, when and where the event took place, the number of people in the area, material in the area of the explosion, and the type of explosion (nuclear, mechanical, or chemical), how far the victim is from the explosion, what protection they had available to them. The principle mechanism driving the extent of the injuries is the amount of kinetic energy released over a short time by the explosion.

Fig2.1 Animal scavenging.

The phenomenon of postmortem animal interference with human bodies or their remains is a substantial part of the taphonomic processes a body undergoes after death and animal depredation occurring after death is routinely encountered in forensic pathology. Postmortem injuries can be inflicted by all kinds of animals, irrespective of their size or environmental origin, whether from land, sea, or air. The discrimination between antemortem injury versus postmortem artifacts generally presents no difficulties because of the total absence of hemorrhages and reddening in the tissue adjacent to the wound margins and the lack of any vital reaction under the microscope.

Fig3.1 Drug murder.

This photo illustrates the level of violence involved in drug murders. This victim and his associate were tortured to death by chain saw and the body parts were dumped at a remote location. This is a morgue photo. The two victims, who had worked for a major drug dealer as “enforcers,” had gone into business together. Instead of retrieving the drugs and money for their boss after killing the errant dealers, they kept the money and sold the drugs.

This photo depicts a standard “execution type” drug hit. The victim’s hands were secured behind his back. A pillow was used to muffle the sounds of the shots into his head. The body was not discovered for several days and you can see the flies on the body along with the maggot activity.

Harris County, Texas, USA. This photo illustrates the appearance of an indoor crime scene involving a high-velocity weapon. The man had placed the shotgun into his mouth. Note that the entire mouth and major portion of the victim’s skull area are absent secondary to gunshot wound of the mouth.

Fig6.1 Gunshot wound to the head.

Gunshot wound to the head, no further info. Head injuries from shotguns and high-powered rifles are typically quite devastating, often with extensive soft tissue destruction, skull fractures, and pulpifaction of the brain. Occasionally, the brain is largely expelled from the cranial vault and may be found near the body.

Fig7.2 Incised wounds on the forehead.

France. A 24-year-old man was found dead by his father lying on the ground in his yard, facedown, in a pool of blood. The handle of a knife was protruding from his forehead, firmly embedded in the bone. There was no evidence of forced entry. No notes were found at the scene. An extensive investigation by the local police disclosed the following facts: the man was living with his parents, had no friends, and was unemployed; according to the medical record, he was suffering from schizophrenia and had not received any psychiatric treatment. He had auditory hallucinations and paranoid delusions (he said “I am quartered by Bin Laden”). No prior suicidal attempts were documented. Initially, homicide was suspected by the authorities. A medico-legal autopsy was ordered by the public prosecutor’s department.

“The handle of a knife was protruding from his forehead, firmly embedded in the bone. There was no evidence of forced entry.”

I’d say that knife was forced right into the top of the person’s skull.

And by the victim himself! That takes a LOT of psychosis to do that much damage to your own body.
