Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Case 1

The head of this individual was crushed when he was hit by a train. Trespassing along railroad rights-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths.

This individual has stippling around the gunshot entrance wounds of the face, no further info. Stippling (or powder tattooing) is red to orange or brownish punctate abrasions surrounding the entrance wounds as a result of pieces of gunpowder expelled from the barrel and striking the skin. Soot deposition is due to the carbon produced by the combustion of the gunpowder that exits the barrel and deposits on the skin surrounding the entrance wound.

Note the bloating and protrusion of the tongue on this decomposing individual, all related to the decomposition process. No further info about this case.

Decomposition, or putrefaction, is a combination of two processes: autolysis and bacterial action. Autolysis is the breakdown of cells and organs through an aseptic chemical process caused by intracellular enzymes. Because it is a chemical process, it is accelerated by heat, slowed by cold, and stopped by freezing. Bacterial action results in the conversion of soft tissues in the body to liquids and gases. The chemicals produced as a result of putrefaction are cadaverine and putrescine, hydrogen sulfide and other sulfides, which generate a horrible smell.

Germany. During fire-fighting operations in a hotel apartment, the firemen found the decapitated body of a 40-year-old apartment occupant lying on the floor in a supine position. The deceased’s severed head was found in the toilet bowl, with blunt force injuries visible in the facial region. At the death scene, a handsaw and a hammer were found. At medicolegal autopsy, it was found that the neck was cut through sharply directly above the thyroid cartilage; the wound margins of the head and neck were clear-cut except for a small end in the dorsal region, leading to the assumption that the head had been cut off with a sharp tool. The spinal column was disconnected on the level of the fifth vertebra, with saw-tooth marks being visible in the margins, corresponding well to the handsaw found at the scene.

The wounds exhibited no signs of vitality. Likewise, no vital signs were found in blunt force facial injuries localized in the vicinity of the left ear and in the root of the nose. They were irregularly shaped, and comminuted skull fractures were present underneath, with brain tissue being visible in the depth of the lesions. The morphology of the injuries suggested they had been inflicted using a hammerlike tool like the one found in the apartment. Autopsy also revealed signs of ligature strangling, as indicated by a bandlike strangling mark on the neck above the cutoff line of the head, with vital signs such as petechial hemorrhages of the conjunctivae and the mouth mucosa and facial cyanosis. Death was attributed to ligature strangling. Decapitation and blunt-force facial injuries could be identified as postmortem mutilation.

This individual has severe crushing injuries over his body, no further info. A crush injury occurs when the body or a body part is trapped, pinched or jammed under or between objects. The pressure can harm skin, muscles, nerves or bone, depending on the degree of force. Traumatic amputation occurs if enough force is applied.
