The Shocker's Mix 100

Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Fig1.1 Gunshot wound to the head.

Suicidal gunshot wound to the head. No further info. The head is the most common location for a suicidal shotgun wound (74%), followed by the chest (20%) and then the abdomen (6%). In head wounds, the most common location was intraoral (50%), followed by under the chin (19%); side of head, including parietal and temporal wounds (15%); and the face, including the forehead (13%).

Fig2.1 Head crushing injury.

This individual died after falling from a height. Severe disruption of the usual facial architecture can be observed. A fatal fall from height refers to an incident where an individual sustains injuries, often leading to death, as a result of falling from an elevated position. Falls from heights can occur in various settings, such as workplaces, residential buildings, or outdoor environments. Common scenarios include accidents on construction sites, falls from cliffs or buildings, or incidents involving ladders or elevated platforms.

Such falls can result in severe injuries, including fractures, head injuries, spinal injuries, and internal injuries. The circumstances surrounding a fatal fall from height are often subject to investigation, especially in occupational settings, to determine the cause and prevent future incidents. Protective measures like guardrails, safety nets, and personal protective equipment are crucial in minimizing the risk of fatal falls.

Fig4.1 Massive head trauma from gunshot.

Suicidal gunshot wound to the head. No further info. At close range, the shotgun is the most formidable and destructive of all small arms. For birdshot and buckshot loads, the severity and lethality of a shotgun wound depends on the number of pellets that enter the body, the organs struck by the pellets, and the amount of tissue destruction. Typically, these wounds are jagged, irregular lacerations with everted edges and bone fragments under the skin.

Germany. A 57-year-old man was cleaning the silo of a wood chip heater when he was caught in the screw conveyor, the man sustained fatal injuries. According to his wife, he left the house at 8:30 a.m. to clean the silo . In this silo, logs would be pulled towards the center into a shredding system by a screw that rotates very slowly horizontally across the floor (360° in approx. 15 minutes) with a screw turn running in a centripetal direction. At around 9:45 a.m., an employee from another carpentry shop noticed a malfunction in the silo. The affected person was ultimately found dead in the silo.

Fig7.2 Superficial cut wounds below the cutoff line.

Germany. A 22-year-old woman was found dead in her flat, lying fully dressed in her bed. Her arms and legs were tied up crosswise behind her back. The head was completely cut off, lying next to the body on the pillow. The bedding was blood-soaked. Next to the body, a long kitchen knife was found. At the medicolegal autopsy, several blunt force injuries to the head were present. Bandlike skin abrasion zones were seen where the arms and legs had been tied up, with soft tissue bleedings underneath, indicating vitality.

The head had been cut off by several incisions, as indicated by many sharp-angled skin ends and superficial cut wounds. The neck was cut through directly above the hyoid bone. The spinal column was disconnected between the second and third vertebra, with countless grooves on both ends. Massive blood aspiration, soft tissue hemorrhage surrounding the lesions, and pallor of the inner organs as signs of bleeding out, were present, indicating that the injuries were vital. Death was attributed to massive neck injuries with decapitation in combination with blood loss.

Fig8.1 Suicidal contact wound under the chin from a 7.62 calibre rifle with destruction of the head.

This victim shot himself under the chin with a 7.62 calibre rifle creating massive tissue destruction, no further info. Head injuries from shotguns and high-powered rifles are typically quite devastating, often with extensive soft tissue destruction, skull fractures, and pulpifaction of the brain. Occasionally, the brain is largely expelled from the cranial vault and may be found near the body. Self-inflicted submental and transoral wounds may produce serious but survivable brain injuries if the path of the bullet is limited to the frontal area.

This individual killed himself with a gunshot under the chin creating a massive tissue destruction. Facial disruption can be seen after the muzzle was placed beneath the chin. In this case, the gun was angled somewhat anteriorly, sparing much of the brain. Death would be expected although survival is seen in some exceptional cases. No further info or what type of gun was used.

Postmortem animal depredation is a substantial part of the taphonomic processes a body undergoes after death. While the occurrence and presentation of such injuries are well known to forensic pathologists, the morphological appearance of these injuries may be misinterpreted by police officers or members of other investigating authorities.

This individual fell from a height in rough terrain, and the body was cut in half from the fall. Detruncation (hemicorporectomy or truncal transection), which is complete separation of the trunk below the shoulders and above the hips.

It can be quite difficult to determine whether an injury is fatal or to predict the outcome in a prehospital setting. In addition to the aforementioned definitive signs of death, there are several body states that are incompatible with life. Catastrophic injuries include decapitation (beheading), which is separation of the head from the trunk; massive destruction of the skull and brain, with loss of brain matter; detruncation, through major organs and vessels; and incineration (charring of all observable body surface). These are conditions in which resuscitative efforts should be withheld.

Contact wound of the right temple with evisceration of the brain. Note soot at the entrance site. In the typical contact wound of the head, the entrance site is easy to locate, as large quantities of soot will be found at it. The edges of the wound will be seared and blackened. The entrance is often bisected by large lacerations extending across the top of the head. Fragmentation of the skull usually occurs. The exit site of the pellets may not be found because of missing fragments of bone and scalp, the massive comminuted fractures of the skull, and extensive lacerations of the scalp.

This individual committed suicide with a gun, there was no further info but it looks like he might have used or tried to use two guns, possibly one to the side of the head and the other inside the mouth. Note the bloody cough and numerous tiny blood droplets surrounding the mouth opening.

Cough as a reaction of foreign tracheal content requires intact reflex circles. Sometimes bloody cough results in a very specific blood spreading pattern of small drops more or less surrounding the mouth or distributing along the direction of cough. Substances such as blood trigger the cough reflex, so if for any reason blood accumulates in the airways, it will be ejected this way.

This decomposing individual died of natural causes while sitting in a warm tub. Note the bloating from putrefactive gases causing the body to float near the surface. People who drown in bathtubs are incapacitated by disease, injury, or intoxication. Sometimes homicide victims are placed in bathtubs to wash evidence off the body. Bodies found in larger areas of water will typically float to the surface as intestinal putrefactive gases increase, causing the rear end to bob up and down with waves similar to an appearance of a tire.

Fig17.2 There was a long black hose that lead from the facemask to a colored balloon. The victim had been inhaling nitrous oxide.

Huntington Beach, California. The victim was a white male, 37 years of age, living alone in a large apartment complex. The body had begun to decompose and was bloated with skin slippage and swollen genitalia. The officer noted that the victim was wearing a pilot-type oxygen mask, which was attached to his mouth and nose. There was a long black hose that lead from the facemask to a colored balloon. The victim also had a black nontransparent set of goggles covering his eyes. There was a Sony video camera pointed toward the victim, whose body was facing a mirror, as if he was watching himself. The tape showed the victim leaning over and filling up the balloon with gas. An examination revealed that the victim was inhaling nitrous oxide.

Autoerotic death refers to the accidental death of individuals of either sex due to failure of devices, or unexpected effects of materials, that were being used to enhance the sexual experience. Although asphyxia from hanging has been described most frequently, a wide variety of other lethal situations have been reported. As there is great variability in the number and types of sexual aids that may be used by individuals, careful death scene examination is essential in helping to exclude suicide and more rarely homicide. The clandestine nature of this paraphilia may, however, make subsequent identification and diagnosis difficult unless the death scene features are typical. This is particularly so in the rare cases involving women.

Fig18.1 Homicidal incised wounds of the neck inflicted from the front.

Incised wounds of the neck can be accidental, homicidal or suicidal. Accidental wounds are extremely rare, usually seen only when an individual goes through a sheet of glass or is struck in the neck by a flying fragment of glass or some other sharp-edged projectile. Homicidal incised wounds of the neck present two different pictures, depending on whether they are produced from the back or the front.

Most commonly, a person’s throat is cut from behind. The head is pulled back, exposing the neck, and the knife is then drawn across it. Often, the victim is face down on the floor or ground at the time the wound is inflicted. The perpetrator usually starts the incision high up on the side of the neck opposite to the hand they are using. The knife is drawn across the neck, from left to right by a right-handed assailant and from right to left by a left handed individual. The wound inflicted is first shallow, then deeper and then shallow again, terminating on the opposite side of the neck. The wound generally starts below the ear; runs downward and medially at an angle, then straight across the midline of the neck, and then upward, ending on the opposite side of the neck, lower than its point of initiation.

A contact shotgun wound of the lower chin. Note the stretch-type lacerations of the right side of the face. In gunshot injuries in soft parts of the body, especially in the brain, the bullet can produce a considerable explosive effect, which is greatest with unjacketed or soft-nosed bullets from high-velocity firearms. Such a bullet may split into several parts, each of which forms its own track, and thus several exit wounds may be present. When such a bullet strikes the head, large parts of the cranium can be blown away and the brain scattered around.

Fig21.1 Decomposing woman in a bathtub.

Woman’s body lying face down in a bathtub in an advanced state of decomposition and with no apparent signs of violence. No further info.

Decomposition, or putrefaction, is a combination of two processes: autolysis and bacterial action. Autolysis is the breakdown of cells and organs through an aseptic chemical process caused by intracellular enzymes. Because it is a chemical process, it is accelerated by heat, slowed by cold, and stopped by freezing. Bacterial action results in the conversion of soft tissues in the body to liquids and gases. The chemicals produced as a result of the putrefaction are cadaverine and putrescine, hydrogen sulfide and other sulfides, which generate a horrible smell.

Putrefaction begins immediately upon death and usually becomes noticeable within 24 hours. As soon as death occurs, the bacteria or microorganisms within the intestinal tract escape from the bowel into the other tissues of the body. As they grow, they begin to produce gases and other properties that distort and discolor the tissues of the body.

Spain. Middle facial injury with cranial rupture caused by shotgun blast. No further info. Despite the extreme amount of cranial destruction, careful and meticulous reapproximation of the calvarium, scalp, and facial tears allows for the demonstration and confirmation of a frontal entrance wound. Reconstruction of the wound can be very important to determine particular wound characteristics in cases of alleged homicide.

Re: The Shocker's Mix 100

Happy 100 Herman, and thanks!

#5 has an interesting telescoped face; it almost looks like the gas cylinder could have twatted him on the side of the head in the explosion.

#6 - Avoid getting too wrapped up in your work, or you could get screwed like this guy.
