Summary: Mysterious deaths of associates of Putin are nothing new but the series of deaths which have taken place since the start of the invasion are getting much more attention on the world stage. Many people worldwide as well as the families of the deceased generally believe that these are staged deaths and that their loved ones were actually murdered. Below is a list of all the notable and suspicious deaths of Russian businessmen, government officials, military officials, journalists, other associates and in some cases, their family members since the start of 2022. (25 August 2023 - Present) Vitaly Melnikov, 77 | Head of the Department of Rocket and Space Systems at RSC Energia Date and Cause of Death: 31 August 2023 | Suspected mushroom-poisoning Circumstances: Professor Melnikov, a leading Russian space scientist and former chief researcher at TsNIIMash (part of Roscosmos), reportedly became gravely ill after ingesting inedible mushrooms and died after more than two weeks of treatment. He had published nearly 300 scientific papers and worked with international partners, including NASA. Vladimir Nekrasov, 66 | Chairman of Lukoil Date and Cause of Death: 24 October 2023 | Acute heart failure Circumstances: The company announced his sudden passing at age 66, with a preliminary conclusion of acute heart failure. His death came amid a string of fatalities among high-ranking executives at Lukoil since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He had reportedly been in good health and was last seen at a corporate event days earlier. Vladimir Sviridov, 68 | Former Lieutenant-General of the 6th Air and Air Defence Forces Army Date and Cause of Death: 16 November 2023 | Officially listed as “no signs of violent death” (possible carbon monoxide poisoning) Circumstances: Sviridov and his wife were found dead inside their home in the town of Andzhievsky, Stavropol Krai. Their bodies had reportedly lain undiscovered for nearly a week. Investigators stated there were no visible injuries and suggested carbon monoxide poisoning, though local gas company measurements did not show elevated levels. Both were found fully clothed and positioned as if they had collapsed suddenly. Vladimir Lebedev, 60 | Russian senator with close links to energy giant Lukoil Date and Cause of Death: 30 November 2023 | Reported heart attack Circumstances: Lebedev was found dead at the age of 60 in his home. He was a longtime figure with business and political ties to Lukoil (and Vladimir Nekrasov) and reportedly in good health before his sudden collapse. Mikhail Marov, 90 | Russian astronomer and space scientist, longtime contributor to the Soviet and Russian lunar and planetary programs Date and Cause of Death: Hospitalized 19-20 August 2023. Died 30 November 2023 | Hospitalized after sharp deterioration in health following the Luna-25 crash Circumstances: Marov, age 90, was hospitalized in Moscow shortly after the failure of the Luna-25 mission, Russia’s first lunar attempt in decades. Reports say he suffered a sudden decline in health hours after the spacecraft smashed into the lunar surface. He had described the mission’s failure as a deep personal loss and the culmination of his life’s work. He died several weeks later on 30 November 2023. Anna Tsavera, 35 | Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Komsomolskaya Pravda Date and Cause of Death: 10 December 2023 | Sudden illness (reported acute heart failure) Circumstances: Tsavera was found dead in her Moscow apartment after her father alerted police when she failed to answer calls. She had reportedly felt unwell for several days, complaining of a fever and fatigue. Authorities said there were no signs of violence or forced entry. Her death follows that of her former editor-in-chief, Vladimir Sungorkin, who died unexpectedly the previous year. Konstantin Alekseev, ~63 | Former General Consul of Russia in Iran; veteran Russian diplomat Date and Cause of Death: 12 December 2023 | Sudden death inside apartment – preliminary cause reported as stroke (non-criminal) Circumstances: Alekseev’s body was discovered by his wife in their Moscow residence on Veernaya Street. He had served as Russia’s General Consul in the Iranian city of Rasht from 2015 to 2019 and previously held senior roles in the Second Department of Asian Affairs at the Russian Foreign Ministry. Local reports state that authorities are investigating, and an initial source cited a stroke as the cause, with no evidence of foul play thus far. Evgeny Postrigan, 50 | Chief Accountant at Information Satellite Systems Reshetnev (sanctioned aerospace manufacturer) Date and Cause of Death: December 2023 (reported on 18th) | Asphyxiation (apparent suicide) Circumstances: Found dead inside the garage of his home in Zheleznogorsk, a closed city in Siberia tied to Russia’s satellite and space-technology industry. The official cause of death was asphyxiation, but no additional details were released by local authorities. His company is a major defense contractor under Western sanctions. Vladimir Egorov, 46 | Deputy of the Tobolsk City Duma, Tyumen Oblast Date and Cause of Death: 27 December 2023 | Fall from a height (suspected three-storey fall) Circumstances: Egorov was discovered dead in the courtyard of his residence in Tobolsk after what authorities described as a fall from a third-floor window. The local investigation declared it an accident, but colleagues and residents expressed doubts, citing his stable career and lack of known health or personal issues. Zoya Konovalova, 48 | Editor-in-chief of the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company Kuban Date and Cause of Death: 5 January 2024 | Suspected poisoning Circumstances: Konovalova and her 52-year-old ex-husband were found dead together at a home in Krasnodar Krai. Local reporting noted no signs of external injuries and cited poisoning as the likely cause while investigators worked the scene. She led a regional state broadcaster described as pro-Kremlin and aligned with the government’s messaging on the war. Alexander Rybin, 39 | Russian journalist, freelancer for pro-Kremlin outlets and contributor to Rabkor Date and Cause of Death: 6 January 2024 | Body found near a highway Circumstances: Rybin’s body was discovered near a road in the city of Shakhty, Rostov region. He reported from the front and had written for ideologically different platforms, including nationalist media and the left-leaning Rabkor site, which has hosted criticism of the Kremlin and the war. Authorities opened a probe into the circumstances. Ivan Sechin, 35 | Rosneft employee and son of Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin Date and Cause of Death: 5 February 2024 | Official cause listed as a detached blood clot Circumstances: Sechin complained of severe pain overnight at his residence in the Moscow region and died within hours. Multiple reports say an ambulance was delayed after security gave the wrong address. His father, Igor Sechin, is a long-time close ally of Vladimir Putin and one of Russia’s most powerful oil executives. Maxim Kuzminov, 28 | Russian Mi-8 pilot who defected to Ukraine in August 2023 Date and Cause of Death: 13 February 2024 | Shot dead Circumstances: Kuzminov was found shot multiple times in an underground garage in Villajoyosa near Alicante, Spain. Spanish media and officials identified him as the defector who flew a Russian helicopter to Ukraine. Ukrainian intelligence publicly blamed Russian services for his killing, citing retribution for his defection. Alexei Navalny, 47 | Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist Date and Cause of Death: 16 February 2024 | Died after feeling unwell following a walk at the IK-3 “Polar Wolf” penal colony. Officially ruled as natural causes. Circumstances: The Federal Penitentiary Service announced Navalny lost consciousness and could not be revived at the Arctic prison in Kharp. Navalny was the most prominent critic of Vladimir Putin, survived a Novichok poisoning in 2020, and had condemned the invasion of Ukraine. His allies and many governments blamed the Kremlin for his death while Russian officials denied responsibility. Andrey Morozov, 44 | Military blogger and war correspondent known as “Murz” Date and Cause of Death: 21 February 2024 | Suicide by firearm Circumstances: After posting detailed Russian casualty figures for the Battle of Avdiivka, Morozov said he had been pressured to delete the post. He then published a note blaming pro-Kremlin media figures and killed himself. His reporting contradicted official messaging on losses in Ukraine. Vitaly Robertus, 53 | Vice President of Lukoil Date and Cause of Death: 13 March 2024 | Reported suicide by hanging Circumstances: Robertus was found hanged in his office in Moscow. His death added to a pattern of fatalities among Lukoil executives. Lukoil’s board publicly called for an immediate end to the war in Ukraine in March 2022, which has kept speculation active around subsequent deaths tied to the company. Aleksandr Surikov, 68 | Ambassador of Russia to Mozambique Date and Cause of Death: 11 May 2024 | Reported sudden death at home in Maputo Circumstances: Surikov was found dead at his residence in Maputo. Local hospital staff said a Russian request blocked an autopsy. Russian outlets cited a preliminary stroke while the embassy withheld detail pending inquiries. He was a senior representative of the Russian state abroad at a time of expanded African outreach linked to the war period. Natalia Larina, 50 | Former judge of Moscow’s Tagansky District Court, involved in high-profile political cases Date and Cause of Death: 5 June 2024 | Fall from a high-rise apartment Circumstances: Larina was found dead after a fall from her apartment building in Moscow. Russian outlets noted her role in politically sensitive proceedings, including cases tied to opposition activity and major platforms, which drew scrutiny during the wartime crackdown. Dzianis Sidarenka, 48 | Ambassador of Belarus to Germany Date and Cause of Death: 24 June 2024 | Reported fall from a window in Minsk, suspected suicide after interrogation Circumstances: Belarusian and exile media reported Sidarenka died in Minsk after a fall from a height soon after questioning by authorities.
