I know I remember watching a few lucky drone drops early in the conflict...but why do the Ukrainians insist on dropping grenades on armored tanks with no personnel or open hatches to exploit? Is there an AT component to these grenades that I am not aware of?

Re: Russian Invasion Ukraine. Day: 368/369/370/371/372 (Feb 27, 28, March 1, 2, 3)
- The extra weight limits the (potential) return range. - they don’t want to risk anything going wrong with the grenades exploding on their own forces while landing or on the way back - the grenades are cheap anyway and any drop makes your “aim” better so it’s training to drop it regardless if you have a useful target to aim at -they have limited flight time so it could be that they are at the point where they need to start returning in 1 minute anyway and the chance of finding a better target (human) is maybe not an option So all of this combined means that the operator will drop it on the tank and return to base at a faster speed (due to lower weight) |

These(maybe not all) grenades are specially designed to take out armored vehicles( including tanks ). They use shaped charges which can penetrate top armor of any vehicle currently in service. It looks like a harmless puff of smoke and no damage, but in reality, the shaped charge creates a small, pencil sized hole in the armor and if you are luky, it ignites the tank from within. And as already mentioned by faust, its probably not the safest thing to return these grenades back to your base. |
