Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Case 1

Marbling is a common finding usually found after at least 24 h since death occurred and is a red, green, and black discoloration that follows the vessels of the body due to the breakdown of hemoglobin. Marbling occurs when certain types of bacteria found in the abdomen “migrate” to the blood vessels, causing them to assume a purple-greenish tint. This effect gives the skin on some body parts — usually the trunk, legs, and arms — the appearance of marble (hence its name).

Natural mummification. Brown to black leathery appearance of the skin. Mummification is the product of desiccation, the drying-up process of soft tissue. Mummification may affect the entire body or only parts of it when only distinct portions of the body have been exposed to the proper environmental conditions. Natural mummification occurs in dry, usually hot climato-logical conditions. However, mummification also occurs in bodies located in frozen environments; mummified human bodies found in polar regions or in glaciers after hundreds of years are of special interest from the archeological and anthropological points of view.

During the process of mummification, soft tissue undergoes considerable shrinkage by losing body fluids via evaporation, resulting in considerable loss of body weight (up to 60–70%). The skin turns hard and has a brown to black leathery appearance, forming a thick shell over the body.

Incomplete skeletonization of a forearm due to post-mortem animal scavenging by a domestic German Shepherd. Skeletonization (synonym: skeletalization) is the total or partial loss of soft tissue (complete or incomplete skeletonization, respectively) with resultant exposure of bones. Incomplete skeletonization may proceed to complete skeletonization but this does not necessarily take place since only discrete portions of the body may be exposed to the proper environmental conditions.

The length of the postmortem interval needed for skeletonization of a body or parts of it is highly variable and mainly depends on the ambient temperature, insect colonization of the body, and scavenger activity. Under warm to hot environmental conditions, and increasingly under the influence of moisture, aerobic bacterial activity from the outside is accelerated with resultant advanced manifestation of odor of the body, attracting insects and scavengers to the body.

The phenomenon of postmortem animal interference with human bodies or their remains is a substantial part of the taphonomic processes a body undergoes after death and animal depredation occurring after death is routinely encountered in forensic pathology. Postmortem injuries can be inflicted by all kinds of animals, irrespective of their size or environmental origin, whether from land, sea, or air. The discrimination between antemortem injury versus postmortem artifacts generally presents no difficulties because of the total absence of hemorrhages and reddening in the tissue adjacent to the wound margins and the lack of any vital reaction under the microscope.

The most effective tissue removers are insects and rodents. Skin and soft-tissue artifacts caused by rodents may occur as early as within the first hour postmortem. In the majority of injuries inflicted postmortem by rodents, the wounds have a circular appearance and the wound margins are finely serrated, showing irregular edges. Distinct parallel series of cutaneous lacerations deriving from the biting action of the upper and lower pairs of the rodent’s incisors are diagnostic of rodent activity.

A garbage truck driver under the influence of drugs did not see his coworker behind him and reversed his truck over him. Most developed countries, including continental European countries, are concerned by the phenomenon of alcohol and drug abuse and its collateral effect, that is, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The use of illicit drugs is increasing, as is the combined use of drugs and alcohol. The under-26 age bracket particularly frequently reports driving under the influence of illicit drugs alone, while mixed use of drugs and alcohol is observed in the 26–49-year age range; and alcohol on its own begins to increase after 50 years.

A man hit on a zebra crossing by a heavy truck (44tons). The body is under one of the truck middle wheels. The driver was under the influence of cannabis. Different drugs impair people differently. Any illegal drug may cause the following reactions: slowing of reaction time, alteration of depth perception, reduction of peripheral vision, confusion, drowsiness, and lack of awareness of surroundings. All these reactions may be useful or vital when driving. On the one hand, dangers of driving after using cannabis are due to longer response times to events or situations and possibly choosing an inappropriate response, the inability to think clearly and to pay attention to other road users, and blurred vision. On the other hand, ecstasy can cause blurred vision and distorts visual perception, making it difficult to judge distances. Ecstasy is a stimulant drug and gives a driver a false sense of confidence, energy, and power. It may impair judgment and increase risk-taking behavior, such as more aggressive driving, decreasing the ability to coordinate the appropriate reaction while driving.

A 30-year-old male pedestrian was involved in an accident with a truck. He became trapped in the front bumper of the truck and was dragged for around 100–150 meters (109-164 yards). At the scene of the crime blood-stains and pieces of flesh and body tissue were seen smearing the road up to that distance. At the terminal end, where the body was found, there were tire marks in a forward and backward direction. Here also, due to fearing the fury of bystanders the truck driver fled. The victim died on the spot.

The garbage truck driver would not have seen the worker behind him whether or not he was DUI.

With a multi-person crew, there is NO EXCUSE for not having a ground guide policy for reversing that truck. The fault is on the owner for not having a policy, or the driver/crew for ignoring the policy.

I've been around here a while.. sometimes on a regular basis (lurking), other times I'll lose interest for months.

Since seeing your posts, they've brought a whole new value to DR that I appreciate immensely. The images AND detailed backstories AND medical explanations that are written with clear knowledge on anatomy, biology, pathology, physiology, peri and post mortem proficiency, etc... THAT is what I crave.

I'm a lowly radiographer but have a passion for the human body and medicine (well, more trauma and the fascination of 'shit, how do you fix that?' or just seeing how unbelievable things can be survivable).

There's far more that I gain from your amazing posts.. I feel I learn so much more from your posts than I do on the job. You almost present case files - unfortunately the most I get is a few minutes with a patient performing scans, rushing off to process them and send them off to the docs, and if I'm lucky enough to have the time, I flick through hospital inpatient's folders purely for medical Hx (which is almost useless thanks to nurses/docs scribbling).

Anyway. You're a gem. Thank you for your work and education <3
