Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Case 1 Attachment 1151830 Fig1.1 Pugilistic attitude of a burned body.
Nassau County, New York. This photo depicts the position the body assumes as a result of intense heat and fire. The burned body assumes pugilistic attitude and what sometimes appears to be a boxer's stance. This is a postmortem artifact resulting from the effects of heat on the muscle protein: denaturation and dehydration. The flexors are bulkier than the extensors, and hence, the overall effect is one of contractures, with flexion at the elbows, wrists and knees. Often the joint spaces are exposed and the articulating surfaces of the bones are charred.

Inspection of teeth in a skeletonized corpse. The teeth and dental restorations are the strongest elements in the human body and survive the destructive influences of fire and exposure to the elements. Methods to identify the deceased must be reliable and accurate.

Case 3 Attachment 1151829 Fig3.1 Saponified corpse.
Saponification occurs when the chemical changes in body fat transform into adipocere. This organic substance is soapy or waxy in texture and has often been given the name “grave wax” or “corpse wax.”
Conditions have to be just right for adipocere and saponification to occur. First, the body must be deprived of oxygen and within a basic pH environment. Second, a certain intestinal bacteria must be present. A chemical reaction then takes place and adipocere forms. The result encases the body in a preserved, almost mummy-like, state. The saponification halts the decomposition of the body, therefore preserving it as it currently is.

Mummification occurs in hot, dry environments. The body dehydrates and bacterial proliferation may be minimal. The skin becomes dark, dried, and leathery. The process occurs readily in the fingers and toes in dry environments, regardless of the temperature. Most mummified bodies are found in the summer months or in hot, dry climates. Mummification can occur in the winter indoors, especially if the heat is turned up, creating a hot, low-humidity environment. It is possible for an entire body to mummify in only a few days to weeks in the right conditions. Once a body is in this state, it can remain preserved for many years.

Case 5 Attachment 1151833 Fig5.1 Autoerotic asphyxia using ligature strangulation.
This individual died from autoerotic asphyxia using ligature strangulation. Note padding on ankles. Pornographic literature was positioned on bathroom floor. Autoerotic deaths involve a large variety of mechanisms and means to achieve sexual gratification. The most common practice is asphyxia, and most victims are young males. Other modalities include chest compressions, plastic bags covering the face, use of electric current, inhalation of toxic or chemical gases, and partial or total submersion. Among atypical practices in autoeroticism, urethral handling through probes is a rare occurrence, and air embolism resulting from such practice is even rarer.

Case 6 Attachment 1151834 Fig6.1 Putrified suicide victim.
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Suicide victim found in mid- to late stages of putrefaction. The marbled green, red, and yellow blistering of the skin indicate at least a week has passed since the time of death. During the later stages of putrefaction, the entire body becomes bloated with the pressure of internal gas and eventually collapses, leaking what is called purge fluid.

Note the bulging eyes and face on this decomposing individual, all related to the decomposition process. No further info about this case.
Decomposition, or putrefaction, is a combination of two processes: autolysis and bacterial action. Autolysis is the breakdown of cells and organs through an aseptic chemical process caused by intracellular enzymes. Because it is a chemical process, it is accelerated by heat, slowed by cold, and stopped by freezing. Bacterial action results in the conversion of soft tissues in the body to liquids and gases. The chemicals produced as a result of putrefaction are cadaverine and putrescine, hydrogen sulfide and other sulfides, which generate a horrible smell.
