Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

Ukraine was inhabited by Tatars, especially in the south/Crimea. But Russia didn't like that because they weren't Russian so they got forcibly resettled to the east so they wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks to Anon for acknowledging Ukraine was its own country before taken over by Bolsheviks after their glorious communist revolution. A very inconvenient fact not widely acknowledged by Russia.
It’s why I laugh when I see people including the Russian government saying that Ukraine should have never been separated from the uSSr after the fall in 1991. It’s such an oversight of Ukraines multi hundred hear old history prior to the Soviet Union.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

I'm kind of fascinated on how small scale drones have become such a new and innovative part of warfare in this conflict. This is fairly unique to this war isn't it?

I know larger drones were used in other conflicts like Iraq... but I don't think smaller drones were used that much, if at all?

I'm curious to hear how different things would have been if you guys had drone units in Iraq/Afghanistan like UA does now? I really see this as a fairly drastic innovation in modern warfare.
Yes it certainly puts things in a dif perspective if you look at it that way & now that drones have become more prevalent in this invasion theater I think that they will become the "Go 2" or main instrument to deliver munitions to the specific required destination. They are more economical costs wise as 1 GPS guided shell can cost $60k US or good shoulder mounted rocket systems 100k compared to the price of a drone. Also, economics play a huge part in warfare so IMO the more that they start to locally build or acquire drones the more benefit that they will get in return as they work very efficiently on the field & can be transported to any area under any conditions without 2 much trouble. The only thing that needs development IMO is the battery life & how they get recharged in the actual field, if the need arises, as I would imagine that using field capable solar panels in the middle of winter wouldn't really be an option so it's going back & forth between the front & a source ie HQ to recharge the batteries, of the drones, that they risk the chance of giving away their positions while they are in transit so it's a delicate balance there but the ordinance dropping drone systems are here to stay that's for sure as you can easily follow your target IRT, day or night & neutralize the threat with relative precision at a minimal cost.

Here’s hoping it does not go another year and the killing stops.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

So the likely outcome of this is going to be Donbas once again stays Russian Ukraine suffers it and we all move on or?

There really are not many options
It will be sold as victory to us because all the newspapers will claim

“Ukraine wins! Kiev did not get taken, Russia was unable to take over the entire country, and thus loss badly!!”

I called that from the beginning as well; it was our western exit-strategy. Try and pretend that Russia wanted to occupy the entire country.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

Indeed. Ukraine originally inhabited by the Turks, I believe. Kyiv is older than Moscow by about 600 years although most pro-Russian people in here will tell you that [conveniently] doesn't matter.

There was also a period in the late 1700's where Russia, under the rule of Catherine the Great, conquered the "Donbas" area of Ukraine for it's coal and other resources and that is really where a lot ethnic Russian presence in the Donbas stems from today. Many Russians settled in the region for work and laid down roots there.

They've been trying to make the Donbas independent from Ukraine ever since. Matter of fact, at one point they didn't even want to be a part of Russia and desired their own independence.

But the separatists from the Donbas could not accomplish this without Russia and here we are.
Do you guys really go back into history 100s of years ago and make claims about supposed genocide?
