Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

I get that. But…

It’s only been it’s own country since ‘91. Prior to that it was actually part of Russia wasn’t it.
It was taken over by Russia in 1920 until 1991. It was only part of Russia for 71 years. The independence of Ukraine predates the formation of the USSR.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

I'm kind of fascinated on how small scale drones have become such a new and innovative part of warfare in this conflict. This is fairly unique to this war isn't it?

I know larger drones were used in other conflicts like Iraq... but I don't think smaller drones were used that much, if at all?

I'm curious to hear how different things would have been if you guys had drone units in Iraq/Afghanistan like UA does now? I really see this as a fairly drastic innovation in modern warfare.
Finding that quite amazing myself.

Same goes for The baltic countries...or poland etc.
They were occupied by the Russians as well. Does it mean that Russia has a right to occupy those countries once again?

India was part of British empire. Should Brittish take over India now....would it be their right?
How about portugal, or spain wanting to get their old occupied territories back?

Indeed. Ukraine originally inhabited by the Turks, I believe. Kyiv is older than Moscow by about 600 years although most pro-Russian people in here will tell you that [conveniently] doesn't matter.

There was also a period in the late 1700's where Russia, under the rule of Catherine the Great, conquered the "Donbas" area of Ukraine for it's coal and other resources and that is really where a lot ethnic Russian presence in the Donbas stems from today. Many Russians settled in the region for work and laid down roots there.

They've been trying to make the Donbas independent from Ukraine ever since. Matter of fact, at one point they didn't even want to be a part of Russia and desired their own independence.

But the separatists from the Donbas could not accomplish this without Russia and here we are.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

Actually no. Drones already proved themselves when US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. Very first scouting drones were used as far as Vietnam war. Ukraine war with drones is unique with how many of them are modified civilian drones instead of relatively large military versions. And we had one ukrainian drone fighting with a russian drone by bumping into it. First ever duel between two drones in history.

Drones are already starting to replace a lot of manned flights, while drones and missiles together are making tanks increasingly more tucked into infantry support role, especially in open fields. So future wars will be fought with toy planes.

Wouldn't be surprised if we get a very silly part of history where tiny submachine guns get installed into drones and they start having dogfights with each other like planes in WW1. It would fit many other weird military units and tools in history, right beside Swedish Cuirassiers (full plate armor knights using double musket pistols) and korean turtle ships (ship with cannon in front and slippery roof with spikes that makes the ship impossible to board and invade from top)

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

Ukraine was inhabited by Tatars, especially in the south/Crimea. But Russia didn't like that because they weren't Russian so they got forcibly resettled to the east so they wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks to Anon for acknowledging Ukraine was its own country before taken over by Bolsheviks after their glorious communist revolution. A very inconvenient fact not widely acknowledged by Russia.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

Small armed drones have been used for a while but not to this magnitude. The larger drones like Turkish Bayraktars and American Predators/Reapers have been around for a while, in other conflicts.

In Afghanistan we would occasionally find Al Qaeda using drones but they weren't dropping bombs on us. Taliban? Hell no. They were content with their rifles, IED's, RPG-7's, radios and small caliber mortars.

One drone in Helmand province near us was shot down by some Marines and it had a thermal imager on it. Taliban were not in that area but Al Qaeda was.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV

[QUOTE=WhiskeyOutpost;7845636]I don't think that's at all what's going on here. A large over simplification.

He IMO did not fight for Ukraine so the idea that pro Ukr people here "hunt their own" is erroneous. Like no one believes him. The things he says are sketchy and he offers no proof of his claims. Even if he wasn't saying pro Rus stuff I'd be extremely skeptical, still.

He does not talk like someone who has been in war. Or possibly even served in any capacity. Those who do don't act or talk like he does.

The main reason he seems to get a lot of resistance is the whole "I know everything and you're wrong please pay attention to me" attitude. There is something very off about it and I'm sure he's thoroughly enjoying the attention.

Ljubodrag and Faust are not able to "give it back". The first chooses not to get into discussion at all outside single sentences and the second is just a projecting troll who desperately wants people to think he's smart.

Exactly Whiskey !

I especially like the part about : "He does not talk like someone who has been in war. Or possibly even served in any capacity. Those who do don't act or talk like he does".

Softer than a marshmallow & definitely has some kind of point to prove to justify his existence, right down to the fact that feels the need to describe what kind of car he drives to gain some type of credibility.

Lame, very lame indeed.
