» VPN Usage

I understand that the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and The Onion Router (TOR) network can be crucial for accessing this site, especially in regions where internet privacy is not a priority. I also acknowledge that some individuals prefer using VPNs or the TOR network, even when they reside in countries that respect internet privacy. However, their usage can introduce complexities, and I wanted to provide some clarity on this matter.

While I am generally supportive of VPNs, proxies, and the TOR network, and have no intention of banning them outright, it's important to note that a significant portion of the daily abuse this site experiences originates from users employing these tools. To protect the site, if you're utilizing a VPN, proxy, or the TOR network, you may encounter frequent captchas or other verification methods to confirm you're not a bot, attempting a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, or engaging in other unwanted activities. In extreme cases, if the abuse from a specific network becomes too severe, we may be forced to ban the entire network. This would necessitate finding an alternative VPN provider or TOR exit node to access the site.

If you're using a VPN, proxy, or the TOR network and encountering difficulties, I recommend installing Privacy Pass (https://privacypass.github.io/). This tool can potentially reduce the number of captchas you encounter. If you find yourself blocked, feel free to email me at chris@documentingreality.com. I can provide some context regarding the block, but please understand that I might not be able to assist you, depending on the level of abuse associated with your IP or network. In such cases, you might need to wait until the abuse subsides and the network ban is lifted..
