Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia

You don't know me but assume everything about me
I know what you have posted and I’m quite sure you have never been anywhere near there, or you would said otherwise a long time ago.

Explain why I was wrong to say they should have taken survival gear with them, and don't move the goalposts again like you did in your previous remark.
You already acknowledged the flippant tone of your post regarding their unfortunate demise. Good. But then, you maintain your position that a simple snowmobile would have saved them. THAT is the problem. More respect should be shown to the deceased and your simple view of the situation is best reserved for your own backyard.

Anyway, this isn’t really going anywhere, so I’ll leave this to you now. Goodbye.

ANY time you are going away from civilization, into the wild, you would be very remiss to not bring overnight survival gear.

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia

The point is there is no “easily” surviving what they experienced in their situation.
Ease of survival depends on your skills and the equipment you have with you.

They didn’t expect to get stuck in the elements, which is why they lacked the equipment to live.
Anyone with a clue would plan for the possibility of being "stuck in the elements" even if they did not *expect* it to happen. You see, sometimes things happen that you don't expect. You should know that, given the site you are looking at.

They would have had to plan on staying out there beforehand to survive that weather for a night
They would just need to be prepared for the *possibility* that might happen. Like sensible people.

and that likely mean bringing much more equipment than one can carry on a snowmobile.
Bullshit. Go watch some hiking/camping videos on YouTube where people camp in (literally) freezing conditions in snow for multiple days using equipment carried in a pack on their back.

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia

I stand my ground on the point that a snowmobile is sufficient to carry enough survival equipment to make it through the night
Of course it is. As I said, plenty of people go hiking/camping in freezing snow carrying the right equipment in a pack on their back. If they can do that, you can easily carry the right gear on a snowmobile.

and in such terrain I would not advise eating cold rations as these will by default absorb body heat which is somewhat counter-productive.
IIRC (from many years ago) consuming hot drink can trigger the body to cool itself down, but at the same time eating *anything* can cause the body to warm itself up due to digestion. I don't think the consumption of food would be a deciding factor (heat-wise) either way, it's really about shelter and warmth (retain body heat and insulation from the cold ground).

They needed the ability to make shelter, they needed more insulation
Yes. Basic hierarchy of needs.

Explorers and military personnel regularly survive in such extreme conditions as these with basic equipment that could fit onto a snowmobile. aside from that, anyone venturing into hostile terrain and conditions must have a survival backup plan for worst case scenarios.
This!

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia

Not to belabor the point, but again, you likely have never been anywhere near this location, therefore you know nothing about what it takes to survive to state a snowmobile is sufficient.
Common sense and a bit of basic knowledge is sufficient. You should try it.

It is not necessary to have been in freezing snowy conditions to know what the human body needs to survive in those conditions. Short term (overnight) - shelter, warmth (insulation from wind chill and cold ground). Next would be water, which shouldn't be difficult in this case. Food becomes a concern after a few days, especially if energy is required.

Some sort of distress alerting device (PLB, satellite tracker, etc) would allow them to summon help within a few hours or at worst within a day so that they would not need to carry enough supplies to survive for an extended period.

Go watch some YouTube videos where hikers/campers survive in freezing cold snow (for fun!) using equipment they carry in a pack on their back.

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia

Ya’ll arguing about not being prepared but 24 of them survived so they must have some type of survival gear with them. The guy in red had broken branches all around him and the other guy had a bloody injury on his nose. Did they crash? Fight? There’s a gun on the ground too! The guy in all black wasn’t even near his snow mobile and his gear was all over the place. No wonder there’s a criminal investigation.

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia

Bit more.

According to preliminary data, two people died from hypothermia. One of the dead, a 35-year-old tourist from Almetyevsk (Republic of Tatarstan), suffered a heart attack.

The second person killed was V. D, a guide from Khakassia who accompanied the tourists. He went on a snowmobile to clear the way for his group, but was never able to get to the base.

V. D., was a high-class athlete. He practiced freeride on a snowmobile for about 10 years. He was a responsive and responsible person.

He's the son of the ex-Minister of Sports of Khakassia.

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia

During the day I would have tried to make some type of shelter accepting it was a life and death situation, using anything available to you. If one of them had a tent they would have survived. Too bad they were not expecting to get stuck in the middle of nowhere
Not that easy, they would've been buried in snow by dawn. It snows so damn much over there that even some trees end up completely buried
