The Shocker's Mix 30

Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Fig1.1 Bloated body found in the Northern Adriatic Sea.

This individual was found in the Northern Adriatic Sea, near Italy. No further info. Many times it is difficult to determine the sex of bodies that have been immersed in water. A body in water generally decomposes more slowly due to the colder temperatures as well as the lack of oxygen.

Bodies removed from water show excessive gas production and tissue discoloration, owing to explosive bacterial gas production. The gas causes the bodies to bloat excessively, which can cause an explosion or sudden rupture of the tense abdomen. The pressure may cause the eye globes and tongue to protrude.

Fig2.1 Skull blown off in air conditioner compressor explosion death.

India. On a fateful day, a 27-year-old mechanic was fixing the compressor of a nonworking AC when there was an explosion. The blast was of such high intensity that a substantial part of his skull was blown off and the entire brain matter was spilling out from the cranial cavity. He died on the spot. The AC was a split type, and the compressor unit was fitted to the outside wall of a jewelry shop.

Scalp hairs were burnt and singed. The cranial bone was absent in an area of 17 × 15 cm in left frontal and both parietal regions. The brain matter was not present. The left eye ball was completely lacerated. Multiple lacerated wounds and multiple abrasions were present on the right ear and front of right hand, respectively. Chest hairs were burnt and singed. A bruise was present on the upper back of the trunk in the midline. Both hands were stained with black greasy material and dust. Internal organs were pale. Cause of death was craniocerebral damage due to explosion.

Fig3.1 Mutilation of a female corpse.

Germany. The corpse of a 32-year-old woman was found in her apartment in a state of advanced putrefaction. The undressed body was lying in a supine position and both hands were amputated at the wrists showing clean-cut wound margins and incisions of the corresponding bones. The external genitals were excised in that a clean-cut skin defect of approximately 10 × 20 cm including the vaginal opening and the first 2 cm of the vagina was missing.

The pubic bone showed several sharp incisions. Small hemorrhages verified by histological examination were present in the right sternocleidomastoid muscle and in the soft tissues in front of the larynx and the thyroid gland. Petechial hemorrhages were confirmed histologically in the conjunctivae and congestion was present in the head/neck region but the evidential value of further histological examination was hampered by advanced putrefaction. The lungs showed pronounced edema and some hemorrhages. Histological examination of the wound margins showed no vital signs such as inflammatory cells. Histology of the other organs and extensive toxicological investigations gave negative results, the previous social and medical history of the victim was uneventful. After exclusion of natural and toxicological factors, the cause of death was determined to be strangulation.

A 33-year-old unemployed perpetrator was arrested 1 month later because fibers found on the dead body were identical to those found in his apartment. He confessed that 9 days before the body was discovered he had strangled the victim and subsequently had had sexual intercourse. He led the police to the site where he had buried a bag containing the hands, the external genitals, a long kitchen knife used to excise the body parts, the clothing of the victim, and several pieces of cloth he had used to wipe the body. DNA analysis verified that the hands and genitals belonged to the victim. Although the perpetrator admitted to sexual intercourse with ejaculation, only cell debris but no spermatozoa could be detected in the swabs taken during autopsy from the remains of the vagina, anus, and mouth or in the external genitals recovered subsequently and DNA of the victim only could be amplified. This could have been due to the state of advanced putrefaction of the corpse and body parts and/or to a lack of spermatozoa in the ejaculate (azoospermia). The perpetrator was sentenced to 8 years for manslaughter.

Fig4.1 Overkill-type injuries.

New York. This individual was murdered by his male partner. Note the increased level of violence and “overkill”-type injuries. In addition to the cutting, the offender stabbed his partner in the head with an ice pick and stabbed him in the neck with scissors. No further info.

Fig5.2 This graphic depicts the dynamics of a firearm discharged into the mouth. The gases expand the cheeks of the victim causing the splitting around the lips.

An extreme example of facial splitting from an intraoral discharge. Conspicuous splitting is noted along the paranasal and maxillary areas with extension to the outer angles of the mouth. The discharge of a weapon involves the release not only of a projectile but of hot gas under high pressure as well. If the lips are sealed around the barrel, the rapid expansion of departed gases causes the cheeks to balloon far beyond their elastic capacity. This results in the characteristic tears seen in the figure.

Fig6.1 Tentative cuts inflicted with suicidal intent.

Tentative cuts inflicted with suicidal intent accompanied by deep stab/ incised wounds to the soft tissue of the neck. Tentative wounds are superficial, usually parallel incisions in the epidermis, at most the dermis, found adjacent to individual deeper skin incisions causing vessel injury. Injury is localized to an area easily accessible to the individual’s dominant hand, predominantly to the flexor side of the left wrist or left side of the neck (in the case of right-handed individuals). These wounds are attributed to the onset of pain experienced when the incising instrument comes into contact with the skin and prevents the incision being made with the initially intended force.

Fig7.1 Multiple irregularly distributed deep stab wounds.

Multiple irregularly distributed deep stab wounds to the head and back: homicide by a perpetrator suffering from paranoid psychosis. No further info. In the case of death caused by stab wounds, diffusely distributed stab wounds are found particularly when resistance has been shown, often to body regions inaccessible to the victim’s own hands, such as the back, and combined with defense wounds. Multiple stab wounds, in some cases exceeding 100, permit inferences to be made about the psychological status of the perpetrator; thus, the presence of psychiatric disease in a suspect needs to be considered in any evaluation of a case.

Fig8.1 Raccoon eyes and pulpified brain tissue forced out of the nostrils.

Occasionally, the fragile orbital roofs and ethmoid bone are so severely fractured as to allow pulpified brain tissue to be forced into the nasal sinuses and out the nostrils. This 34-year-old man was ejected during a motor vehicle accident. He sustained a crush injury of the anterior calvarium which extended through the orbital roof. Note the brain parenchyma extruding through the nostrils. Note the periorbital ecchymosis (raccoon eye).

Raccoon eye or periorbital ecchymosis is caused by blood tracking into periorbital tissues (the area around the eye), which is frequently observed after head trauma but is also observed in systemic diseases, such as amyloidosis, neuroblastoma, and surgical interventions.
