i've known a lot of good cops in my time. one of my exes and i used to take real-world self-defense instruction from one. my stepfather and his son are former sheriff's deputies. i've been pulled over and ticketed by some really cool traffic cops back when i worked in transportation. i've even picked up the check for a table of local city officers who were having lunch at a place i drink at after work.

that said, i still maintain that asshole cops are the scum of the earth. way back in early '05, a live-in girlfriend of mine got all drunk and pilled-up and started picking a fight with me, swinging on me, and kicking out windows and whatnot. it didn't take long for one of my neighbors to hear the ruckus and call the cops. and despite the fact that she had hit ME several times and didn't have a single mark on her, the first little piggy on the scene cuffs me and makes me sit down on the floor, completely ignoring not only the other witness there at the time (who just so happened to be a really cool guy that this class-act of a lady in question HAD DATED BACK IN HIGH SCHOOL) who said i hadn't done shit but also the fact that my girl was CLEARLY intoxicated. after a few more officers showed up, this initial responder took it upon himself to flex his tiny little nuts and say, "maybe we should take those cuffs off of you and see how you handle a man."

without missing a beat, i locked eyes with him and responded, "sure; and while we're at it, we can strip off that gun, that taser, and that badge of yours and i can show you how you and her are the only little girls here."

he didn't say another word. thankfully one of the other 4 officers recognized me from a traffic stop a few weeks prior (so he knew i was a nice guy, because i had been to him) and told him to go wait outside before they helped me up and into the back of a squad car. i got the feeling he knew what a prick officer tough guy was.

like i said: asshole cops, just like the ones that led the charge on Mr. Thomas. there is no reason why 6 200-plus-pound officers have to use such force as to render a man comatose and intubated aside from cowardice, malice, and/or sheer fucking incompetence. hell, not even ONE cop would have an ample excuse. i don't care how stressful or dangerous or thankless their job is under other circumstances. that's what training, equipment, backup, and counseling is for. they knew what they were getting into when they signed up and took the oath. if they can't hack it, they can show themselves the door. but the venting of that stress on a citizen who poses no serious threat -- no matter how uncompliant he or she may be -- is a detestable and often criminal course of action on their part.

it's called professionalism, and it's not just for soldiers and hitmen.
