What is sad about this case is kelly had over 92 run in with the police of all different degrees so the police knew about him, not good, but as a parent I would do every thing in my power to have my son committed for his own protection and the community til he could prove that he could stay on his meds. I realize the age of your post, but if you ever stop by, know that it takes moving mountains to get an adult child under conservatorship and even harder if they have no financial means that you can use as a mark to show reckless behavior.

Kendra's (NY) and Laura's (Cali) Laws only go so far and Cali is so psycho, they haven't implemented it fully after 15 years.

It allows involuntary inpatient, with input from a mental health team, friends, family and any other coworkers and/or program directors. Cali has been slow to implement demanding "rights" of people who have no idea who they even are, to be able to take care of themselves.

After the 72 hours, most facilities want to dump you out, because there is an added court cost to get a longer stay, generally around 3 days, 7 days and 31 days, making it more expensive to treat you. I have a severely bipolar son, who at age 13 can actually refuse his medication because he's "old enough" to make medical decisions, even if I legally have to deal with the fallout if he stops taking them.

Texas, it's 12 years of age. Of course, I have not informed him of this. But once he hits 18, and he stops his meds - I can do nothing, but watch him take whatever course he ends up in - whether it's jail, or taking his meds himself.

He can refuse to come home, he can refuse a home at all. He can refuse to work or anything else. To get him in a hospital, he must be in "imminent" danger to himself or others. And even THAT is impossible to use, usually an act has to already be attempted... and again, that's only temporary - until he's "stable", i.e. doesn't try to hurt someone for 3 days in a row.
