Re: Man Dies After Losing Grip on Barbell, Which Strikes His Chest
He's using what's called a "suicide grip" which involves the thumb being on the same side as the other fingers. In addition, that looks like 3 plates a side, or 315lbs. At 55 y/o, a spotter should be used for most lifts over 1 plate, since the risks of injury are magnified with age. |

Re: Man Dies After Losing Grip on Barbell, Which Strikes His Chest
Those are 25lb plates- so he’s benching 195lbs. And yes he’s using suicide grip, something I would only do with a safety bar rack. I’m guessing the impact ruptured an artery/vein around his heart or a torn aorta. Happens frequently in car accidents with chest trauma. |

Let me have another crack at it... here it comes: For someone whose technique was all thumbs—he sure as hell came up two-short when attempting to raise the bar in bench pressing. |

Id say he snapped his Sternum I guess you could survive someone standing on your chest but, all that weight concentrated in a little spot would have just totally crushed flesh and bone at the impact point.

Re: Man Dies After Losing Grip on Barbell, Which Strikes His Chest
Again, 99% sure it’s a torn aorta or blood vessel near the heart- he’s literally bleeding out on the inside. Happens all the time from chest impact- like a steering wheel hitting your chest during a car accident.
