Re: Deformed Torso of Teenager
I cannot even imagine the pain he is in because I have scoliosis but nowhere near as bad as this and I take morphine daily for it.What it does to your ribs is horrible with the feeling of spasms running across your ribs like a torture.

This is why you don't drink when you're pregnant.

Re: Deformed Torso of Teenager
Yes, this is definitely a severe case of scoliosis. In "yesteryear" this boy would be called a "hunchback." As I'm sure bernard can confirm, scoliosis is actually a twisting of the spine, ribcage, & torso. It's not actually an "S-shaped" or "crooked" spine, though that's how it appears on the outside. The spine, ribs, & muscles are under constant tension, which causes severe pain. Unfortunately, this child's case would be particularly painful, including making it both difficult & painful to breathe, as well as walk. Kind Richard III (the infamous anti-hero of the Shakespearean Play) suffered from a similar condition, yet that tough bastard still rode into battle. You can also see how observers might say that "one leg/arm was longer/shorter than the other," due to the way the hip (in this case) or the shoulder is cocked up to one side. Surgery is interesting, to say the least. The doctors screw metal hardware to the vertebrae, then have to "untwist" the torso, & you can see the tremendous amount of torque that's being applied. It looks more like a mechanic's procedure than surgery. bernard, I feel for you, & wish you the best! |

Re: Deformed Torso of Teenager
When I get my surgery I will be posting the photos and yes I have one leg that is shorter and walking can cause alot of pain in the hips. Also it causes your ribs to spread at a slow rate which is horrible one side of the rib cage is bigger because of the spreading. All though mine is no where near as bad as this and I cannot imagine the pain he has since its basically like being tortured.I live on morphine for tha last 4 years.

Re: Deformed Torso of Teenager
I remember when I was a kid in school this was more common and we would all have to take off our shirts so the school nurse could have a look see at our spines. To bad he was never able to get the help he needed early on. |

Re: Deformed Torso of Teenager
Definitely scoliosis. I have scoliosis but thankfully after years of sleeping in a brace has partially corrected it. My sister though wasn't as lucky and they didn't find her scoliosis until it was at a 70 degree curve so she had to have four back surgeries, a metal rod, 30 metal plates and a hundred or so screws.
