I'm reminded of the B-52 at Fairchild AFB that lost lift (stalled) at a 93 degree bank at extremely low altitude while practicing a flight profile for an airshow. When your wings are perpendicular to the ground, they aren't providing lift in a beneficial sense.

Perhaps our mishap pilot here wasn't properly configured for take-off, lost thrust, and then compounded the problem by throwing the aircraft into a 90 degree left turn. Immediate side-slip into the terra-extra-firma.
Was thinking pretty much the same, wings just said "nope"... Terrain with 100% PK for the win.

Went through survival not long after the 52 went in, wreckage was gone but the scorch mark was still very much there. Lots of stories from the SERE instructors, as you can imagine.

From the looks of it they r not just iron, but thermobaric which no one had during WW2 if I’m not mistaken
