You know aviation has been screaming that there aren't enough air traffic controllers. 70% did not meet staffing needs. Biden didn't do shit. Thank God trump came in. He fired 400 senior officials and 4000 air traffic employees. 8 days later, this happened. Thank you trump. |

The controller manning the tower was covering TWO positions by himself. Not enough controllers available. Some contract company in California came in at an airport there, cut all the controller salaries by $60,000 per year, and they all quit. They are negotiating now. The pressure on the contract company will be to pay them decently, or have no staff.  |

How did that black hawk pilot not see that plane? Those pilots are supposed to be the best of the best are they not? And flying too high, almost seems intentional. |

I'm pretty sure the investigation will show that the Blackhawk crew was operating on night vision goggles which severely restricts their peripheral vision making it nearly impossible for them to see the airliner. The big question is going to be why didn't they stay clear of it when they said they saw it in would stay clear. Were they lying about seeing it or were they looking at something else. Usually when these helicopters operate in that airspace with night vision goggles they would have a crew chief on either side of the aircraft in the back looking out peripherally. There were only three people on the helicopter which means they're short a lookout in the back that may contribute to the problem.

Here’s my guess. ATC did not maintain adequate spacing and separation between these two. The Jet appears low. The helo a bit high. Combined with a basic collision course intersecting over the river missed by ATC. Both “should” have collision mitigation and alert systems. Possibly either ignored by one or both. Possibly too congested or low to perform. I’d expect solid air traffic control in that area and if indeed understaffed that would certainly contribute. I don’t think it was just one factor though. |
