Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas

I think they are adorable, but I heard that if you are holding one and it jumps, it may burst open upon impact with the floor... and that's just not something I want to risk. Maybe one of those pet rock ones would be good for me lol. I'm more of a reptile girl. Now those, I understand. I do want to get a few mantis tanks set up one day though. Maybe some chubby roaches. Heehee. I can't help it, I just see a mantis and start squealing like most girls squeal over a fluffy puppy in a designer purse! They are the most adorable critter I've ever seen!
Not all tarantulas are able to jump but if you are holding one that can and you're just standing up holding it, then you probably have nothing to worry about.. it's the non-jumpers, the terrestrials you have to be cautious with because yes, they can rupture very easily as they really fragile creatures. You're best bet is to hold them low to the ground or let them walk on the floor (well supervised, of course).

I LOVE reptiles, though, I wish I was able to care for them right now, I'd have a few of my own. Mantises are great, though!

I only have a leopard gecko now, but in the past I had a king snake and a Yemen chameleon. There may be a Kenyan sand boa in my future :) but I'm waiting until my boyfriend's birthday in October. We always by each other gifts we both want lol.

Can you recommend me a tarantula breed then? I really would love to get to know one.

Nice!! I'll have to look up the sand boa and the chameleon.. I do love chameleons, though, I think they're adorable. Kudos on finding a boyfriend into exotic animals.

And as far as recommendations, given your history with reptiles, you could probably handle the speed of a beginner's arboreal tarantula (they're the ones you don't have to worry about falling and then rupturing :)).. reptiles are more high maintenance than arachnids so most beginner and intermediate spiders will probably be a piece of cake for you so long as you research their basic needs. I can get you a few caresheets to look at or you can always PM me if you ever have any questions, but try looking into the Avicularia genus of tarantula.. Avicularia avicularia (common pinktoe) and Avicularia versicolor (Antilles pinktoe) are the most easy to find and they're cheap, but you really cannot go wrong with any pinktoe. They're lively, docile creatures who very rarely ever bite.

Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas

In the 80s I was in the Marines. I brought out a little black tarantula from South America. He made the trip in a little Styrofoam cup. He adapted to the climate in the States very well. I would let him out with supervision at the office in my hut. He would sit on my shoulder while I was doing paperwork. Perfect little gentlemen. I had much traffic through my office just to hold Vlad the Impaler and keep him company. He was quite the hit. Everyone was always looking out for him catching the biggest and juiciest insects for him. He lived for two years and then one day he was gone. He was just a damn spider but everyone was bummed when he departed for better hunting grounds. Stay thirsty my friend!
sounds like a brazilian black. Most docile tarantula i can think of.

None of the OP pics are mine, though I had a greenbottle blue adult who died a few months ago. I do have:

2 brachypelma boehmei (Mexican fireleg),

1 poecilotheria regalis (Indian ornamental),

1 brachypelma vagans (Mexican redrump),

4 avicularia metallica slings,

1 aphonopelma seemanni (Costa Rican zebra),

1 poecilotheria metallica (Gooty sapphire ornamental),

1 psalmopoeus irminia (Venezuelan suntiger),

1 psalmopoeus cambridgei (Trinidad chevron),

1 avicularia versicolor (Antilles pinktoe),

1 grammastola rosea (Chilean rose)
