Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas

once you tried to get him back into the cage he would start to panic and start jumping and scurrying along everywhere.....not fun chasing a big fucking hairy spider around!
When I first got my tarantula, I was handling her for the first time and when I went to put her back in her tank, she freaked out and crawled up my arm and onto my upper back... Then she got a little hostile and I laid on my stomach until my brother got home so he could get her off without pissing her off
only good spider is a dead one
Tarantulas aren't the same as spiders, and don't be a pussy.
You obviously know a little bit about tarantulas, but I thought I'd add my two cents a bit. :)
Heh. Lemme just stop you right there... I actually don't. I've done a good amount of research since I got my rosie, and that's about it
While many of the brightly colored tarantulas are highly venomous/tempermental, the aggression/color correlation is not necessarily true.
Right you are, I sorta just generalized it (in an ignorant and careless way, I suppose) to explain it in an easier way to someone who doesn't know anything about them.
The blue tarantula you are referring to, is it this one?
The picture wouldn't load properly for me... but I was referring to the Colbalt Blue tarantula. One of my favorites, although you posted some very beautiful ones as well.
The only species able to flick utricating "hairs" would be New World, terrestrial (ground dwelling species), so that fancy blue one doesn't actually have the capability.
Yeah... I totally generalized all of my "facts" about tarantulas. Sorry again.
And as far as aging tarantulas goes, it really can't be done.. Grammastola roseas (Chilean Rose) are extremely slow growers, some of the slowest out there, and so if yours is a "good size" then she's probably much older than you think. :)
Yeah, the dealer told me the same thing. He was basing her age more off of how long he had had her, though. Right now she's around 3" and actually just molted 5 days ago. I was told they grow to be 5" though, so I wasn't sure... I hope she decides to stick around for awhile

Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas

Cool pictures. I used to be scared of spiders. Silly thing obviously, coz most arent venomous and hostile at all. It's just the way they move that irritates me.. Too many legs.

Well, getting older I'm trying to be more tolerant.

So, why are they that multi colored? Can they change colors and adapt to their surroundings?

I'm not too sure about why some of them are so brightly colored other than perhaps as a warning to predators.. they change color as they grow and mature, but they are not able to change hue like some creatures do as a defense mechanism.

Yeah... cobalts are definitely defensive as shit, haha, beautiful creatures but they're a species I'd rather admire from afar with all of that digging "underground" and the aggression.

Congratulations on the molt! I had a recent one myself.. it's a neat process. My mother's rosie hit a whopping 6 inches so you might get a fluke mammoth, too.

Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas

I have a few of these guys. I love to collect them. I can post up some pics if anybody wants to see some big spiders (of me handling them)

Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas

WERD..
I used to catch them crawling on the road on Camp Pendleton. I would see dead one hit by cars when I was running. For some reason, they are attracted to the road. Maybe the heat?? The ones I caught were never blue or red. Usually brown, but very aggressive.

Thanks Yeah, she molted overnight and I actually didn't notice until maybe half a day later. Shame I missed seeing the actual process for myself, but I've seen other's videos of their Ts molting and it's pretty cool :D
My rosie acts weird, though. She hasn't eaten at all since I got her 10 months ago, and the dealer said she hadn't eaten since 2 or 3 months before he sold her to me so she's been fasting for at least a full year and it worries me constantly
She's my first T and I'm worried I'm gonna find her shriveled up one day.

Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas

I think they are adorable, but I heard that if you are holding one and it jumps, it may burst open upon impact with the floor... and that's just not something I want to risk. Maybe one of those pet rock ones would be good for me lol. I'm more of a reptile girl. Now those, I understand. I do want to get a few mantis tanks set up one day though. Maybe some chubby roaches. Heehee. I can't help it, I just see a mantis and start squealing like most girls squeal over a fluffy puppy in a designer purse! They are the most adorable critter I've ever seen!

Nah, don't worry.. rosies are a desert species and are prone to very long fasting periods. If their abdomens aren't shriveled or especially small, you have nothing to worry about. Year long fasts are not unheard of. :) She should be ready to eat once she hardens from this molt, though, she'll need the energy. Wait two weeks from the time she molted and then attempt to feed her. :)
