some of the spiders we have here are poisonous. i've had black widows on me a few times and hobo spiders on me a lot.... so there is a visceral response from seeing them. probably some sort of defense mechanism.

For me its not the size but the venom. I've had spiders a tenth the size of this on me that make me jump 'cos I know what their bite will do.

exactly... and in these parts, they are all small and there are quite a few that look similar to venomous (not poisonous... my bad) species, so it's hard to tell which is which.

Maybe it has something to do with the way it moves? Or the way that all of it's legs are spread out?

Spiders always reminded me of hands. And if you think, when an open hand comes towards you, it's generally a bad sign. So maybe people have a negative association with them in that respect?

Makes me shudder. Can't help it. Ugh. It's all those legs that creep me out. The 'tickle' they would make walking on you. Kudos to you for not killing it though. I don't kill spiders, even though I can't help but shudder when I see them. Especially BIG one's. If they leave me alone, I leave them alone. We have a mutual avoid each other policy, but sometimes they disobey the policy.

I have had wolf spiders walk over me while I was sitting on the couch watching tv, it IS startling when you are not expecting it. When a spider is on the floor or wall and it is a variety that you do not wish to have in the house, do this:

Materials needed: stiff piece of paper, a clear glass.

Place the glass over the spider, slide the paper underneath the glass until the glass is covered. Congratulations you have trapped a spider without touching it! Now go and dump the spider outside. Congratulations again you did not kill a spider! He will gladly go and kill a lot of bugs that you hate.

That's just a wee baby one. I must admit though that it can be a bit unsettling to see a big one dart across the ceiling in the middle of the night and disappear into the corner above your bed.

The spiders i really can't stand are those white-tails, nasty bite, aggressive and likely to be hanging around inside the house. Gotta keep a heathy number of daddy-long-legs around and they will keep em under control for you.

Good ol huntsman, I had one about 3 times that size in my bedroom not long ago. Walked in, turned on the light and BAM my eyes fixed onto it instantly considering its size. Suffice to say I didn't feel like sleeping till it was promptly removed from the area haha.
