Re: Extinct Animals That Were Photographed Alive
http://dodosgone.blogspot.com/ <- Animals that were finally classified, or have become extinct since the start of the 21st century, and here's a sad fact for ya, Amphibians are declining fast:In 2004, the Global Amphibian Assessment, a survey of amphibian species, found that nearly a third of the world's known amphibian species are threatened and more than 100 species had gone extinct since 1980. Rising temperatures lead to outbreaks of the Chytrid funguswhich is killing off amphibian populations around the world.

Re: Extinct Animals That Were Photographed Alive
The worst part about all this, besides animals going extinct, is that because of human domination of our biosphere, we really will never know just how much is natural and unnatural extinction. Animals go extinct all the time naturally... but now that we humans affect the world so much, it's nearly impossible to know just what we are causing ourselves... I suppose, though, it's better to err on the safe side. Biodiversity is important as hell

Re: Extinct Animals That Were Photographed Alive
Every now and then in the Earth's history, there is a mass extinction of life. Normally this happens when there's some massive natural disaster, such as a huge meteor hitting the Earth at the end of the Cretaceous (famously wiping out the dinosaurs). Currently, because of humans, animals are going extinct at the rate of a mass extinction. |

Re: Extinct Animals That Were Photographed Alive
This is true, Pigeon... let me say thank god for a voice of reason amongst the other absurd threads at the moment. But yes, you are right... however, I wonder how the extinctions would be going if we could erase humanity and its effects. For all we know, maybe our "timing" is coincidental... now, by no means take that as me condoning human activity at all. I'm just saying... now that we are so ubiquitous in the world, it's so hard to really know what is natural and unnatural. Have you seen "Avatar" by any chance? That's a great film, actually, sort of deals with this topic a bit... I liked it. Now I just have to see it in the theater. |

Re: Extinct Animals That Were Photographed Alive
Mass extinctions are natural and part of life (that sounds weird, but it's true), but we're causing one... we've destroyed the habitats of everything that used to be where our habitations now are and now overpopulate the entire planet. It's possible that nature is also causing the mass extinction, but humans definitely play a major role in it, at best. I haven't seen Avatar. I have no idea what it's about; I just thought it looked crap and dismissed it. |
