Re: Vic Morrow's Death on The Set Of The Twilight Zone
Well, the pilot Dorsey Wingo did warn Landis, but it wasn't the size of the explosion that got him. It was pure act of God.... the explosive on the tower went off and the coffee can like covering flew up and hit the tail rotor, causing an immediate loss of control. Dorsey tried to push the helo down as quickly as possible to try not to hit dozens of others standing around the pond. He actually made it, but as you can see in the distant shots - he hit very hard right on the edge of the bank and the helo bounced and tipped over. My brother was an alternate pilot on that shoot, and was listed in the credits and trial documents as the fuel truck driver. He was one of the two men you see run out to try to help Dorsey out of the helicopter. My brother said the first thing Wingo said, was "are Vic and the kids ok?" - Craig told him, "Dorsey, the blade got em..." Dorsey had to be carried out of the water. The little boy was in Vic's right arm, and the blade chopped off the back of his head. Craig (my brother), said he was floating on his back in the water, and it looked like he was ok, but when they tried to pick him up, his brains were trailing behind him. The blade went down through Vics right shoulder, and came out above his left hip, cutting him in two. The little girl was cut in half at the waist. Very, very tragic. As a pilot myself, we were all mostly concerned that at the time of the accident, they were trying to of course nail Landis for working the kids after hours, but they also went after Wingo like it was HIS fault. The whole aviation community was up in arms over that. Of course, everyone was cleared - but it has haunted Mr. Wingo ever since as you can imagine. |
