Re: Budd Dwyer: Full Video and Story

I'm pretty sure it wasn't live TV. That's what pissed so many people off about it; the news programs weren't caught off-guard, but instead chose to run the story and push the envelope as close to the bounds of FCC standards as could be gotten away with.

The death itself was not aired, and different affiliates cut the tape at different times. One that I'm aware of even went so far as to show everything up until the second before he pulled the trigger, then froze the video at the frame of him with the gun in his mouth while the audio continued to play. The man who made that decision was interviewed in "Honest Man" and claimed that he did so in the hopes of enlightening people as to the finality of such an act. In response to such sentiments, Dwyer's son called "bullshit," and said it was all about ratings.

Also, even if Dwyer had done time, his ability to profit off of the situation following his release may have been limited by law. In most cases, a convicted party is not allowed to profit off of his or her crime; I don't know if the same applies to someone claiming innocence or not, but it may. Either way, the damage he was worried about would have been done: his family would have lost their house, been financially damaged, and he would have been a disgraced man with no chance in politics. As was clear in his statement to the press, he had given up hope of ever getting anyone to care about his situation and the underlying causes thereof; prison time would have just cemented such hopelessness, I would imagine.

Re: Budd Dwyer: Full Video and Story

I seen the documentary and fully believe Dick Thornburgh was behind the obvious set up. Here is the Dwyer final statement along with a letter to "Joe Biden" then Chairmen of the Senate Judiciary Committee, outlining what he thought was needed changes in the judicial system to prevent what happened to him from happening again. It really connects the dots.

Re: Budd Dwyer: Full Video and Story

I have looked at this case before. It is also my opinion that this man was innocent. A sad tragedy.

Re: Budd Dwyer: Full Video and Story

Y'know, this makes me wish I could pencil in and vote for Dwyer as my preferred presidential candidate in the next election. If enough people did it, it would send a message that voters would prefer a dead man over the usual crop of assholes that we get to pick from every four years.

Re: Budd Dwyer: Full Video and Story

Like everyone else, I saw the few seconds of him putting the gun in his mouth, heard the basic story, and thought "crooked politician too chickenshit to face the consequences of getting caught".
But when I saw An Honest Man...this has haunted me ever since how wrong I was, and how screwed over he was.

Re: Budd Dwyer: Full Video and Story

I've seen the documentary about him. It's called "Honest Man," and it really does endear Dwyer to the viewer. I, for one, believe he was innocent. The governor of Pennsylvania at the time pretty much railroaded him when he refused to sign off on the release of state taxpayers' funds to cover a variety of the governor's personal expenses and dalliances.
Yea, I saw that documentary as well and it definitely does endear him to the viewer. Most people don't know the details of what led to Dwyer doing what he did. I for one believe that Dwyer was a good and honest man who was loyal and completely devoted to his family. In fact he was so devoted he was willing to take a bullet to the brain on national television. To ensure that his family would be able to take care of themselves. The bad guy in this story who's legacy should be held in shame is not Budd Dwyer. Like you said, it was Pennsylvania's shady ass wasteful spending Governor who will forever have Dwyer's blood on his hands.

What we need right now, here in America today is a Federal version of a Budd Dwyer to watch over the Obama family and all their waste. A man like Dwyer who insist on doing the job he was elected to do whether they like it or not.

Re: Budd Dwyer: Full Video and Story

Yeah, state treasury secretary is an interesting position. None of the taxpayers' dollars get spent unless the treasury secretary signs off on it.

Honestly, I'm wondering if there is or ever was a petition going around demanding that Dwyer's conviction be overturned.

You know,,,, I have no clue if there is or ever was a petition like that to ever make it's way around but I sure wish there was one. Corruption, abuse of power and especially the abuse of people by those who hold that power has always been with us, as far as politics go. However, seeing those abuses corrected is an extremely rare thing in the world of politics. And to see the abuse heaped upon Budd Dwyer resolved is something I would definitely support.
