However she could have shot over its head, the muzzle flash alone would scare it shitless.
Precisely.

A top tier predator that is starving to death is about as dangerous a situation as you are likely to encounter.

If they are that hungry, a warning shot may do no good. In any case, they would keep coming back until they fed - ON YOU - or were killed.

Not rocket science.

Re: Washington State Girl, 11, Shoots Cougar That Stalked Her Brother

I allways say! they were here first and we deforest/build houses/condos...where are they to go? Its our fault and they get the shitty end of the stick.

Before I begin my tirade, I'd like to say I'm probably one of the world's foremost "cat people".

It's very awful that a cougar was about to turn someone into a meal, but did it really need to die? Couldn't the girl have struck it with something instead? The cat could have been treated and relocated. The poor animal was just trying to survive!
Fish and wildlife should look at ways to increase proper prey for them. It's generally unnatural for mountain lions to consider humans a food source unless they're desperate, like this one was.

All that said, I'm very happy the humans are okay.

No we dont usually have guns, some hunters do and country folk but not as rampant as the US.
Do the country folk in Canada not have guns? Do their bears and cougars prefer a vegan diet?

I grew up in the woods of Northern California. We always had guns. There were close encounters with bears and one crazy guy who escaped custody and decided to sit on our front porch. They were also good for when we needed food in winter. It's just a tool. Not a pseudo penis.

The kid made it inside. The cat was obviously starving to death. Wildlife services should have trapped her, got her health back on track and released her FAR FAR away from this property considering how many of these animals have been killed there.

This animal is on the endangered species list.

No they're not. Well, the Florida Cougar is but that's a different subspecies. And they would have shot and killed it themselves. I know because we (when I was in the DNR) had to track and kill one once.

Re: Washington State Girl, 11, Shoots Cougar That Stalked Her Brother

If it's a case of the flea bag or a humans life, the human should win out every time. The world won't end because of dead cougar!
Neither does it end because of some dead brat.

Not everyone necessarily believes that a human has any greater inherent value to the planet than a cougar, you know.

In fact, there is statistically a FAR greater chance that the little mongrel child who was 'rescued' will grow up to harm you, your family, or this planet. A human's potential for causing misery and destruction is far greater than that of a cat's. Think on that the next time you cheer the death of a wild animal in favor of some human breeder's mewling spawn.

I find it hard to believe a cougar would be stalking a human when they already had the element of surprise especially a small boy.

Also they should have called fish and game or w.e they have down there. They would trap the animal and relocate it, if it was that desperate for food out would have been as simple as putting a few pounds of meat out.
