Re: Israel Rejects 20% Increase in Annual US Aid
Bringing in million and millions of Muslims... odd, there are any 3-4 million Muslims in America and only half of the projected growth is/was due to immigration. People have kids, people change their religions, and Muslims have been here longer than we've been a country; being mentioned in a 1682 Virginia statute on religious freedom and even fighting in the American Revolution. The Sultanate of Morocco was the first nation to recognize US sovereignty. Jefferson hosted an iftar (meal breaking the fast of Ramadan) dinner in 1805. The importation of slaves from Africa brought more Muslims, and Muslims fought in the Civil War as well. The mid 1800s to early 1900s saw frequent small-scale instances of immigration. The fact is that Muslims have been here since the beginning. Furthermore, the US has only pledged to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees this year- a far cry from millions. There is, however, a great difference between Muslims in America and Muslims in Europe. American Muslims tend to assimilate more and see themselves as being much less ostracized than their European counterparts. When it comes to ethnicity, Asians and Arabs (which obviously make up a large portion of Muslims in America) are considered "white", so there is much less opportunity for allegations of them "stealing our jobs". They are as educated/more educated than the rest of Americans, and about a third report incomes above $75k. Part of the affluence comes not just from long-term stability and family roots in local communities, but the sheer cost of immigrating to the US from another continent. You can walk or take a makeshift raft to Europe, but it's not the case here. The refugee resettlement system in America is also far different than eleswhere. Our government relies on non-government organizations for the care of most of the refugees coming here, from travel loans and housing to job placement and financial assistance. We don't give out envelopes of cash and a free apartment. |
