Re: Israel Rejects 20% Increase in Annual US Aid
I think we could carve a nice little spot for the Kurds in Iraq/Turkey/Syria/Iran. The Kurdistan issue is a great example of why the Middle East is so screwed up. The carving up of the Ottoman Empire after WW1 led to areas of domination and later ill-devised borders with little to no concern with who actually lived in the region. That's why I say, only partially in jest, that WW1 never really ended. It just sort of shifted around a bit, and maybe now making its way back across the globe again. The partition of the Middle East shows us a fundamental problem with the idea of a homeland. It works okay for the people that are already there, but serious issues arise when it comes to the immigration of others who consider it their homeland as well as opposing groups who also consider it "theirs". Palestine and Israel is the most striking example. Even in America we have the same problem, albeit at a much smaller scale. Different tribes of Native Americans may claim a homeland, but what of the immigrant-descended Americans who have made those very places their homes? We reach a point where we label some groups as "deserving" of a homeland while denying others the same. Or in some cases we may mind that even though someone may deserve or have rightful claim to a homeland, we nevertheless reject attempts to award the land because of the resistance to the current inhabitants. Imagine, if you will, if the rest of the world drew up a map of the United States and divided it into mandates, each controlled by a separate nation or coalition. The borders of these mandates would be set in accordance with the needs or desires of the foreign countries with no regard to the occupants. Texas and California could be placed within the same boundaries, the same with Louisiana and New York. There could be a few places designated for Native American use as well. It wouldn't be pretty, and we shouldn't expect it to work very well. Likewise, we shouldn't expect the same from the Middle East. I don't know. It's fun to think about, and there's a feel-good moment when imagining people finally getting a place of their own... I just don't see it working out like we hope. Check out Africa, where newly-independent leaders initially tried to keep the status quo. Or the Balkans, where the local leaders took it upon themselves to trace out the lines. Neither case resulted in a utopian society. Perhaps it's one of those situations where you can have great ideas but never a satisfactory outcome. |

Re: Israel Rejects 20% Increase in Annual US Aid
Right, who needs sources when you can just rely on Oswalds memes to get your news I would think the sociopath would not want an informed following You'll find that in most dictatorships, communist countries, or any other place where freedom doesn't exist, control of the media and access to information Is a key part of the rulers agenda. Why? To keep the people believing the bullshit? Why does China censor the Internet? Why does North Korea control all aspects of media and information? So the Oswalds that work for the dictators, the communists, or the Mullahs don't need to answer questions That's the beauty of democracy, is that we have free press and access to the information that proves to us just how full of shit Oswald is Now, if people decide they don't like freedom, information, or informed opinions, then they can just take Oswalds word for it.......... But, that's throwing away your freedom...... Freedom that people died for you to have. It is what it is |

Re: Israel Rejects 20% Increase in Annual US Aid
One thing that I notice about sources used here- Not a single link is from an Islamic group, be it just a blog or a foundation of some kind (community center, university, or otherwise). That's another frustration- people get their information about Islam from anybody OTHER than Muslims. It shouldn't be difficult to see how that is problematic. We don't ask Rabbis to explain Mormonism, do we? www.al-islam.org |

If you read thorough the posts, they've made it abundantly clear that they have no respect for sources, stats, or data Not just sources that support a position, but ALL sources. I'm really having trouble comprehending that. |
