I’ve been waiting 12 years for my girl to detonate. Still hasn’t happened. Nor did it happen with the one before her or the two before that one.

Funny, it also never happened with any of the many i’ve known through friends and aquaintences.

I also don’t hang around idiots who don’t know dogs - so maybe that’s the key.

I tend to agree with you regarding pit bulls more than most supporters. Having said that, I have known a bunch of pit bulls that had a totally sweet disposition, due to their owners never abused them and put in the time to socialize them when they were puppies. Unfortunately most working-class citizens in developing countries do not have the time to train these dogs appropriately and therein lies the problem; idiot pitbull owners that range from clueless to abusive that have done nothing to discourage their aggressive tendencies and consider owning a 'scary' dog a status symbol.

But what about those who do take care of their dogs, do take the time to train them, and the pit still turns on them? Not saying it happens all the time, just saying you also have to take in account those situations. I'm pretty sure lions are tameable animals, and some tamed lions don't turn on their owners, but that doesn't make them safe or that they should available to everyone

That’s the thing. It doesn’t happen.
The people you see on the news and in articles who say they’ve trained their dogs and such - haven’t.
Most people think they’re a good dog owner - many people are wrong.

If you are a good dog owner, you can see the behavioral problems before they turn into something deadly and you correct them. Not only do you see them, you work to correct them.

Just because someone is nice and is passionate about their dogs, doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing.

Dogs do not suddenly turn. It’s not a thing. It’s only a “thing” if you don’t know what you’re looking at. If you don’t know the body language of dogs, you won’t see behavioral problems, until they’re dangerous. The more energetic, powerful and high drive the dog is, the more dangerous the problems can become.

You cannot compare lions to a domestic dog breed. Lions are wild, not domestic.

I'd have to disagree with the "high intelligence" part. I have ex-colleagues and friends that breed dogs specifically for hunting pigs, they really know their dogs. Of course they have tried pit bulls in their pack, usually as "holders", the more intelligent breeds are trained as "bailers" (black lab was popular in the genetic mix).

The trouble with pit bulls is that they get tunnel vision when they get aggressive, they'd latch onto a boar and get torn to shreds, because the intelligence to back off has been selectively bred out of them. I recall one guy stopped using them completely in favour of bull mastiff/ staff terrier crosses, after a massive vet bill.

I have also heard of the failure of PB’s as hog dogs, because of their tendency to grab and not let go, no matter how bad the situation gets for them - Or chewing the pig up, when they’re supposed to be holding.

They were made to hold on(to the other dog) until grabbed by their handler and pried off with a break stick. The ones that did let go before pulled off, were considered “Curs” and were supposed to be culled.

Tenacity was/is very important for fighting other dogs in the blood sport. Don’t stop, even when it hurts. Can you imagine watching boxers in the ring, quit after getting punched? People wouldn’t watch.
It can be seen as stupid, or courageous - depending on who you ask.

By intelligent, I mean they can be trained to do many jobs and learn them quickly. Dogs with high drive usually are quick and eager to learn.

Staffordshire Terriers are Pit Bulls, close enough cousins to be under the umbrella.

American Staffordshire Terrier
Staffordshire Terrier
Bull Terrier(Pit Bull with some other shit mixed in)

The last one on the list is the most diluted, but still as feisty and prone to fighting as all the others.
