Would not get me in one of them, unless i had a parachute, and a reserve...worry about getting free of the sleeping bag my legs are in, nearer the time

It’s a paraglided. They do not have a rigid frame keeping the airfoil. They can’t penetrate strong downdrafts or thermals. His wing collapsed from a strong downdraft causing him to spiral down. Why he didn’t deploy his rescue chute is beyond me. He should not have been flying in those conditions.
Maybe he didn't want to die in Ukraine?

Well he’s got a “rigid frame” now.
You’re correct in that he was in the wrong type of rig for the conditions and for some reason known only to him, he didn’t deploy his chute.

That is his variometer. It tells you if you’re gaining or losing altitude.
