That wasn't a parachute it was a paraglider (not paraglided) he was flying. The sound of the vario and majority of the flight indicated very mellow conditions in the air. The light wing collapse likely happened because he hit some turbulence or a stronger thermal, however he should have been able to correct for it and continue flying but I think he reacted improperly with the wrong inputs which led him into the spiral dive. As a long time hang glider pilot I shudder when I see people flying those paragliders wings, they fold up in the air so easily in turbulence, however this collapse looked like it would have been easily recoverable by an experienced pilot.
