What is interesting is that the soviet rounds actually don't provide better penetration because of their steel composition, because of the softness of the steel grade chosen and the diminished density of a steel projectile rather than a lead one.

Good ID on the weapon though.

Something else I may not have mentioned, green tipped 7.62x39mm rounds are most likely Chinese tracer rounds, not steel core rounds.

Also again just because the .308 and the 7.62 share the same bullet diameter, there is an enormous difference between the two.

.308 is NEARLY analogous with the 7.62x51mm and the 30-06 round, but has a different pressure level during deflagration, which means the are certainly not the same round no matter how similar they might appear.

Thanks for the compliment, and I do have to disagree with the steel core ammo not penetrating better, I currently don't own a 7.62 variant to compare that ammo, but I know with my Mosin-Nagant the old steel core stays almost perfectly intact when shooting, we found a barely harmed steel core inside of an engine block we were shooting, and my 5.45 AK-74 penetrates much further with steel core ammo, so I'd imagine the same is true with most 7.62x39 ammo.

As for the .308: .308 Winchester is almost identical to 7.62x51 NATO, which is roughly comparative to the Russian 7.62x54R round found in the SVD, and Mosins as well as MG's such as the PKM. Or yes a 30-06 is about the same size.
