Re: Russia - Guy Dead After Failed Parachute Jump
~ I assume that he as an amateur first, opened the main parachute too soon, before terminal velocity, so it got tangled. ~ Second he didn't know how to discard the main parachute to open the reserve parachute. ~REM: The reserve parachute is connected to both the main parachute and the reserve parachute ripcord. Once a skydiver 'cuts-away' the main parachute, the RSL (Reserve Static Line) leaves with the main canopy. While the main canopy and RSL jettisons away, the RSL is also attached to the reserve ripcord, and so it deploys the reserve parachute. ~ How do you deploy a reserve parachute? You need to 'cut-away' the main canopy and deploy the reserve. All modern rigs have a mechanism called a three-ring release that connects the main canopy to the container. To 'cut away' the main parachute, you reach down and pull the release handle attached to one of your shoulder straps. ~ The job of the RSL (Reserve Static Line) is to deploy the reserve parachute. Remember, it is connected to both the main parachute and the reserve ripcord. ~ Mistakenly, the word 'cut-away' does not mean to literally 'cut' 'away' the main parachute, it's simply means to release & discard the main parachute along with the ripcord that releases the reserve parachute. ![]() |

Re: Russia - Guy Dead After Failed Parachute Jump
Sometimes our lives are a noble example to others. And sometimes they are just a cautionary tale. |

Re: Russia - Guy Dead After Failed Parachute Jump
"It is specified that the deceased jumped with a parachute for the first time in his life." Allow me to correct that last line: "It is specified that the deceased jumped with a parachute for the first and last time in his life." |
