Total self defense - even prior to the cutting, it was clear which direction the aggression was coming from. And to anyone who wants to talk about the law or civility, you're living in a fucking dreamland. If somebody walks up to you like that, there's potential to catch a punch the wrong way and be dead in a second. Also, the suggestion of walking away from somebody walking up on you is pure Darwinism, which is ironically how the 'victim' checked out in this example.
