On a similar note, did you know that inhaling simple helium directly from the valve of a tank instead of a balloon is likely to be fatal? Even sucking from a helium-filled balloon can be dangerous but is usually not. It's a fun fact I recently learned.

I remember that case of a little girl who sat on the drain of a swimming pool, probably enjoying the sensation of suction, but then to her horror realized her intestines and bowel had been sucked out through her anus and into the drain. Author Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club) wrote a short story on this idea, IIRC.

Weird! Even if his colon was burst, a half decent surgeon could have removed the damaged large bowel and he could still have lived.  |
