The kid can't swim it's that simple, when he initially dives in the water he makes sure he makes it to the other side in one go, he then loses his grip on the rock and knows he either tries to swim or he drowns, seeing as he can't swim he drowned. |

There’s no “whirlpool”. He panicked. Once that happens it’s over.... quicker in fresh water as you’re less bouyant than you’d be in salt water. It’s actually very hard for a person to sink in salt water if they relax. Panic and steady as she sinks. Even easier in fresh water as outlined.
