Police investigate death of ice hockey star A. J. killed 'when skate slashed his throat in freak accident' - as fans plead for club to look after the other player involved in crash.

Police are investigating the death of a tragic ice hockey star who is believed to have been killed when a skate slashed his throat in a freak accident.

A. J., 29, is believed to have been struck in the neck by an ice hockey blade in a freak accident at the match between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers at Utilita Arena Sheffield last night.

Heartbroken fans and his teammates have left tributes to the American athlete today - as they urge the club to also look after the other player involved in the clash.

South Yorkshire Police were contacted at 8.25pm, and confirmed he was later pronounced deceased at hospital.

Officers from the force remain at the scene and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

A spokesperson said: 'We were called at 8.25pm yesterday (28 October) to report that a player had been seriously injured during a Sheffield Steelers versus Nottingham Panthers game at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield.

The American athlete injury last night was so horrific it forced the game to be abandoned and left traumatised fans in tears.

The club have previously rallied behind M. P. after he was booted out of two of four games last season for allegedly jabbing another player with his stick and abusing officials, The Star reported.

Coach A. F. defended him and rubbished 'very, very soft calls', but admitted sometimes he needs to 'tone it down'.

Not only was M. P. kicked out of two out of the last four games for abusing officials and spearing, nobody in the league comes close to his penalty minutes tally. There have also been numerous written complaints about this guy. So, when A. J. was killed due to M. P.'s overly aggressive playing, people just want to write it off as a "freak accident" ? Perhaps if he wasn't such a belligerent and hostile player, this wouldn't have happened in the first place. At the very least, M. P. needs to be banned from playing hockey.

I have, too, and I totally agree. There's no need for his foot being so high, especially when you play with the hockey stick.

I was at the game. I'm sure he didn't mean to end A. J. life, but intent to injure was there. He does it every game and both teams are joint 'First Place' in the league. He is a violent player. He should be banned for life.

Very unfortunate to bad they couldn't save him I remember some frightening incidents in the NHL with Buffalo goalie marlchuck and Florida Panthers forward Richard zdnick I think almost died from similar situations with skate blades to the neck areas

Steelers fan here. Was wondering if this would make it on to here…

Was at the game, kids near me were crying and people throwing up. I’ve a pretty strong stomach thanks to lurking in here but seeing that much blood come out of a guy who is still (somehow) able to get up and move is messed up. Game atmosphere for fans here in the UK is normally super friendly, great day out for families, rivalries aside, so it’s awful to have something like this happen.

I’m in a mixed mind about M.P. He’s an aggressive defender and problematic at times, but I’m sure he’s gonna be fucked up in the head after all this, hopefully he gets some support, whatever the outcome of the current police investigation is.

Rest in peace A.J. Passion or not it’s no way to go.

That's just crazy...they should have some extra protection for that kind of injury. So sad he died when it could have been prevented. Hopefully it will lead to better protective equipment.
