HOWEVER, it may be defense of others since the victim does seem to be attacking and maybe even choking the girlfriend. HOWEVER, as a general rule, you don’t bring a knife to a fist fight. The force used can’t exceed the force protected against. At the same time, the guy is on the ground in a tough position relative to the fight. It’s a case that’s ripe for a trial. Former Boxing Champion’s Killer Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison

The Gyula Regional Court on Friday sentenced a man to nine years in prison in a first-instance ruling for the fatal stabbing of former boxing champion Sándor Pál Szabó at the Munkácsy Hotel in Békéscsaba in August 2023, according to MTI.

The Incident The events took place late on the night of August 15, 2023. A 28-year-old man from Érd and another man from Budapest were dining and drinking with others as guests of the Munkácsy Hotel. The man from Érd began acting loud and aggressive toward the waiters. One waiter asked the hotel receptionist to call the security guard, Sándor Szabó.

While Szabó was being summoned, the primary defendant and his partner began to argue; the woman tried to withhold a seven-centimeter pocketknife, but the man managed to take it from her. When Szabó arrived, he struck the guest twice, causing him to fall to the ground. However, the man then pulled out the knife and stabbed the security guard in the chest, leg, and face. Szabó was rushed to the hospital by paramedics but died from blood loss.

The Escape and Arrest The man from Érd fled the hotel and hid near a local sports field with his 46-year-old companion. They later asked a colleague—who was unaware of the preceding events—to drive them to Monor, where they hid at a remote farm. The following morning, the man eventually turned himself in at the Monor Police Station.

In October 2024, during a preliminary hearing at the Gyula Regional Court, the defendant did not plead guilty; the trial formally began in early 2025.

The Verdict The court has now found the man from Érd guilty of manslaughter. He is not eligible for parole. The time he has spent in custody since August 16, 2023, will be credited toward his sentence.

The second-tier defendant, who assisted the perpetrator in traveling from Békéscsaba to Monor, received two years in prison for aiding and abetting (accessory after the fact) and is also ineligible for parole.

Mitigating and Aggravating Factors The presiding judge emphasized that the sentences for both defendants were lighter than the median range for such crimes.

For the primary defendant: The court took into account his clean criminal record, the fact that he surrendered voluntarily, his lengthy time already spent in pre-trial detention, and the fact that the victim’s own behavior played a role in the escalation of events.
