“Arguing to argue” is what people reach for when they do not want to engage with what was actually said. I quoted your words and described their implications. You responded with sarcasm and fantasy instead of substance.

That final comment says plenty on its own. You frame disagreement as performative loyalty because you assume motives must be transactional. That worldview explains both your resentment and your fixation on race.

Nobody is chasing approval or looking for a parade. People are simply calling out behavior that keeps proving why moderation follows you around.

Gorelord, I will remain neutral toward you regardless of our differences and apply the rules the same way I would to anyone else.

Moderation here is based on rules, order, and the long-term health of the site, not personal opinions, politics, or feelings. If moderation were driven by individual viewpoints or grudges, this place would not survive. Moderators who operate that way, regardless of platform, do not last very long.

Rules exist so everyone knows where the lines are, including staff. They are applied to behavior and patterns of conduct, not viewpoints. That structure is the only reason a site like this functions at all.

Which brings me to a procedural reminder. Public complaints about staff fall under rule 10 and should be taken privately to Chris, the site owner. This thread is off topic enough as it is.

Did a quick follow-up on this since the comments went exactly where everyone expected them to go.

Core facts are basically unchanged. Midday, targeted shooting. Three shooters ran up on a specific car and dumped a lot of rounds, then fled.

Woman died, man survived, baby in the back seat unharmed. Some reporting now suggests the child may have been the man’s daughter, though that hasn’t been uniformly confirmed. No one in custody as of now (2/8).

The crime itself is horrific. What’s also pathetic, though unsurprising, is how fast the comment section turned it into racial fan fiction. That reflex says more about the commenters than it does about what actually happened here and is why I’ve largely avoided the death boards beyond occasional, silent visual reminders of the state of the world in my 15-year stint as a WC agitator.

However, recent events in my country have lit a bit of a fire under my ass when it comes to sitting idly by while others spew hatred and ignorance unchecked, so I’ve been a bit more vocal as of late.

For anyone who doesn’t live off headlines: Chicago, which I have visited regularly for over 25 years, is not a Mad Max wasteland, but it’s not some innocent utopia either.

Violent crime here is real, concentrated, and largely driven by personal disputes, criminal networks, and retaliation cycles. It’s also geographically uneven and statistically predictable. Most people go about their lives without incident every day. Both of those things can be true at the same time.

This wasn’t random, and it wasn’t a referendum on an entire city or population. It was a small number of people making catastrophic decisions that destroyed a family and traumatized a child.

Turning that into racial chest-beating or political point scoring doesn’t honor the victims and doesn’t help prevent the next one. Boiling it down to retardation like “blacks being blacks” isn’t analysis or anything more than scum floating to the surface of the pond.

Gallows humor is fine and expected, but the daily, at times hourly outpouring of racism commingled with bargain basement political ranting is not; if anything gets this place shut down it will be enough people with power witnessing the level of open, casual dehumanization being normalized here and deciding it’s not worth defending.

If anything, the most depressing part of watching these videos online isn’t the violence itself. It’s how eager some people are to use real deaths as an excuse to say the quiet hateful parts out loud.

If that makes me a “snowflake” (regardless of my centrist political views or penchant for enjoying race-based and otherwise irreverent humor which is on display in the place Chris created for it, the fucking Water Cooler), then so be it. I’ll take empathy and compassion over a racial superiority complex and the hollow bravado that usually comes with it any day.

I've noticed that as well. ChatGPT (and Google Gemini) also tends to use "it's not this, it's THAT" language which is an even bigger tell.

I've had to chew dozens of contractors at my human services company new assholes for using it to write their fucking case notes and monthly reports, which are official documents used in court, so our bottom line is at risk if the state decides to deny billing because people are too lazy to observe and report without AI holding their hands. And don't even get me started on the copy/paste errors.

I've been writing tl;dr posts in the WC since 2010 (even a casual browse of my history in there will yield thousands of pages of debates, ruminations, and philosophical rants), yet I still get accused of using AI from time to time by monosyllabic buffoons who can't fathom why someone so long-winded might frequent a place where "blacks being blacks" and "LOOK, she peed her pants when she died but I'd still DO her! HYUK HYUK" are the standard.

But anyone who's been around long enough can vouch for my verbosity. Hell, I'll even use an em dash from time to time, though I usually reserve those for fiction or poetry. Lol AI rarely uses them as precursors to lists or a cue to expect gradual buildup of concepts but instead as a way to "sound more human" (interruption, omission, dramatic pause, etc.) which is pretty ironic since most humans don't use them in general written parlance.

I personally can't stand AI generated writing (though I love playing with images). It tends to reflect the views of its designers which lean towards political correctness and always has this polished, bloodless, corporate sheen. But it can be a useful business tool when it comes to editing, tweaking systems, and checking policy against documentation, which is a hell of a time saver.

Speaking of saving time, if you ever want to know whether someone is using AI on a message board, all you have to do (if you don't want to shell out the clams for the sort of AI detection software colleges use to deter cyber plagiarism) is watch how long it takes for someone to make a substantial reply.

If they're spewing 800 -1,000 polished, structured words with zero typos in under 3-5 minutes, that's statistically improbable without pre-writing, pasting, or AI assistance. I've been calling out these sudden geniuses whenever I run into them. For example, there's a racist goon in this thread who obviously used AI to take one of my replies and do a near note-for-note parody of it in record time.

Now, can we get back to discussing issues of race and violence in Chicago? Consistently going too far off-topic in this forum is actually a rules violation, and I don't need Wondermammy up my ass. Apparently I'm white knighting for her now. Cheers.
