In this case, you wouldn't want to plug the holes completely. The difficulty he was having breathing, along with the hemorrhaging we could see are indicative of a traumatic pneumothorax (AKA collapsed lung).

Wounds to the chest cavity can result in a condition where the individual is unable to create the normal negative pressure in the chest that forces air into the lungs.

Just plugging the wounds will help to reestablish the pressure gradient, but you also make it more likely that the victim will "drown" in their own fluids, as those wounds are just going to empty into the thoracic cavity.

The recommended treatment is to seal the wound using an impermeable dressing, or even cellophane, but only taped down on 3 sides. When the victim inhales, the dressing will seal the wound, and potentially allow them some relief.

Note: In a pinch, the packaging that most bandages come in will work, and the inner portion is sterile.

When they exhale, the dressing releases, and allows for fluid to drain, as opposed to building up in the chest.
