A 21-year-old man was shot and killed in the driver’s seat of his car in Hawthorne Thursday, July 8, and police were searching for the shooter, authorities said.

Hawthorne police were called to an apartment complex in the 14100 block of Chadron Avenue about 4:10 p.m. and found the man slumped over behind the wheel of a car in a rear carport.

The victim, identified by the coroner as Z. D. R. of Los Angeles, had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

“It appears to have been a walk-up shooting and he appears to have been targeted,” police said.

The suspect fled the large, multi-story, gated apartment complex before police arrived. The block, in the east side of the city, has several multi-story complexes.

Detectives were checking video systems in the area and were working on leads.
