Re: England 1985 - Stadium on Fire - 56 Dead

I remember watching this live on the TV and just being stunned as it unfolded before your eyes.... when the live pictures of the dazed man who was on fire came up we couldn't believe what we where seeing. He and his clothing had become so super heated he burst into flames, he wasn't the only one there where a couple of Policemen who suffered bad burns when they used their coats to shield themselves and rescue those who had become so disorientated they had but seconds left to live also one of the people who was just in front in the man who erupted in flame on camera had the same happen to him as he went off camera but he was in the crowd and they just jumped him and smothered the flames....there where some very brave people that day, some of whom where terribly injured saving others...most those injured saving others where the policemen who repeatedly went back even though they could feel their clothes burning. As one said, how could I live injury free knowing I could have saved several lives.
The only live broadcast of the event was on the radio, I heard it. There were news bulletins covering it shortly afterwards with some of the video, but it wasn't live.

What the hell do those knuckleheads have to cheer about? If the wind was blowing in the opposite direction, thousands would have died.

Re: England 1985 - Stadium on Fire - 56 Dead

The only live broadcast of the event was on the radio, I heard it. There were news bulletins covering it shortly afterwards with some of the video, but it wasn't live.
It's true to say that the match itself wasn't being broadcast live. However, ITV's World of Sport programme WAS interrupted to show what was happening, live. I know this because I remember watching it on TV with my mother and younger brother as it happened, and that includes seeing the guy who'd just emerged from the far end of the stand engulfed in flames (they had no opportunity to censor the live images). A few years ago I did a 3-day fire risk assessment course in Manchester. One of the trainers had been one of the fire crew called out to that fire. I think I remember him telling us they later found several of the victims still seated in their seats under the charred debris of the stand.

At one point in the footage you can see the fire shoot along the top of the wooden barrier at the front of the upper stand (at about the 3:00 minute mark in the video embedded in the original post, but it's hard to see in this version because of the low quality). This was pointed out on the training course as a clear example of how quickly fire can spread.

Re: England 1985 - Stadium on Fire - 56 Dead

I was stationed in Germany back in 1985, when the infamous European Cup match between Liverpool and Juventus in Belgium. 39 people got trampled to death. I remember the radio shows screaming about the English fans, and English teams were banned for a few years.

Re: England 1985 - Stadium on Fire - 56 Dead

11 May 1985
Bradford City vs. Lincoln City F.C.

The score was still 0–0 after 40 minutes of the game, when a small fire was noticed three rows from the back of the ground's main stand.

The flames became more visible within minutes, and police started to evacuate people in the stand less than six minutes later.

The game was stopped, and the wooden roof caught fire. The fire spread the length of the stand, and timber and the roof began to fall onto the crowds.

Black smoke enveloped the rear passageways, where fans were trying to escape.
Ultimately, the fire killed 56 spectators, ranging from 11-year-old children to the 86-year-old former chairman of the club, Sam Firth.

At least 265 further supporters were injured. The few existing narrow escape routes led to locked doors in some cases, and the only escape for most spectators was directly onto the field.
