Re: England 1985 - Stadium on Fire - 56 Dead
It's true to say that the match itself wasn't being broadcast live. However, ITV's World of Sport programme WAS interrupted to show what was happening, live. I know this because I remember watching it on TV with my mother and younger brother as it happened, and that includes seeing the guy who'd just emerged from the far end of the stand engulfed in flames (they had no opportunity to censor the live images). A few years ago I did a 3-day fire risk assessment course in Manchester. One of the trainers had been one of the fire crew called out to that fire. I think I remember him telling us they later found several of the victims still seated in their seats under the charred debris of the stand. At one point in the footage you can see the fire shoot along the top of the wooden barrier at the front of the upper stand (at about the 3:00 minute mark in the video embedded in the original post, but it's hard to see in this version because of the low quality). This was pointed out on the training course as a clear example of how quickly fire can spread. http://www.fireservice.co.uk/history/bradford-fire |

Re: England 1985 - Stadium on Fire - 56 Dead
I was stationed in Germany back in 1985, when the infamous European Cup match between Liverpool and Juventus in Belgium. 39 people got trampled to death. I remember the radio shows screaming about the English fans, and English teams were banned for a few years.
