I believe the rubbing and tapping was more of a conscious effect based on the very coordinated and controlled movements he was doing, even his face says pain he is clearly very conscious. Its possible to lose a lot of brain matter and still be conscious. This behavior he is doing is called competitive inhibition, like when peter from family guy fell and hit his knee.
