Cop Charged with Manslaughter After Killing Homeless, Psychotic Man
Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater released four videos of the incident . Prater charged OKCPD Sgt. Clifford Holman with first-degree manslaughter Thursday, filing that Holman “willfully, unlawfully and unnecessarily killed B. E. by shooting him with a firearm, after an attempt by the deceased to commit a crime had failed.” The body and car camera videos show the final moments of the life of B. E., a 60-year-old man who experienced homelessness and psychosis, and they detail the actions of the three OKCPD officers who responded to a call about B. E. bothering customers outside a Hefner Road shopping center. Master Sgt. Keith Duroy and Sgt. Michael Smith were speaking with B.E. for more than three minutes before Holman arrived on the scene. The footage from Holman’s body camera, embedded below, reveals that Holman arrived on the scene at the 2:08 mark of his recording and began shouting commands at B.E., “Hey, drop the knife, dude!”, before fully exiting his vehicle. Within 28 seconds, Holman has fired three shots at B.E, the third of which hit him in the center of his back as the man ran away from all three officers. Holman was charged with manslaughter, but Duroy and Smith are not facing charges. The order of events as shown in the videos progresses as follows: Officers Duroy and Smith speak with B.E, backing away as he approaches and following him as he backs up; Officer Holman arrives on scene and begins shouting commands immediately; Holman deploys a Taser and proclaims that it was “no good”; Smith deploys a liquid spray, slightly hitting him in the face; Holman deploys a Taser again; Smith sprays again; Holding his knife in his right hand, B.E. runs away from his belongings and toward Duroy, who fires his pistol three times, hitting him in the abdomen and arm/chest; B.E. turns and runs away from all three officers; Holman moves in front of Duroy’s police vehicle and fires his pistol three times, missing him once, grazing his leg and then striking him in the center of the back; B.E. falls to the ground; As two additional officers arrive, Duroy limps owing to a muscle pull and kicks the knife away from the victim’s body; Officers stand above B.E., who raises his arm weakly; About 43 seconds after he was shot, officers flip him from his back to his stomach and handcuff him; About two minutes after he was shot, Holman touches E.s’ head and asks, “Hey, hey, you alright, buddy?” Holman checks his pulse and determines he does not have one. Officers begin setting up a perimeter and start providing medical aide. A bystander video of the shooting was posted to social media and sparked a loud public outcry denouncing the officers’ actions. https://www.documentingreality.com/f...police-218447/ Police have now released their own video of the encounter and subsequent shooting. |

I dont understand why the cop was charged. Im a liberal, but this guy had a knife, and ran at the officers. There are countless examples of cops brutaluzing innocent people and murdering unarmed people, but I do not think this situation falls in that category. The cop did his job properly in my opinion. |

I assume he's being charged because the guy was running away from the cops and he was shot in the back, the danger to themselves had passed. |

This looked like a crazy situation and it all happened so fast... If I was a cop I probably wouldve done the same thing.

You cant be shooting perps in the back while there running. That cant be tolerated. Seriously. A bunch of high school kids could had detained that guy without it coming down to guns and death.

Dumbest thing I heard all day. I've seen knife combats in my hood. Let's just say some is getting cut no matter what.

Re: Cop Charged with Manslaughter After Killing Homeless, Psychotic Man
My problem is that this policeman (the one being charged) arrived on the scene that already had a few police officers trying to diffuse the situation. Rather than getting a sense of what was happening upon his arrival, he took it upon himself to play King Cop. He should have allowed the on-scene officers to handle the situation, like they had already started to do. Instead he got the homeless guy all worked up and escalated things. Then he shot they guy in the back as he was running away.
