They should look into all other aspects of her life too, home life( maybe domestic abuse and violence ) school bullying perhaps, other mental issues...who knows.

We might underestimate the pressure students are under in some cultures because of different cultural realities eg family expectations regarding academics and employment, the family's future depends on the child's ability to send money home in the future, the competitiveness to get into a school in a very populous country. Further culture can create pressure on people based on gender eg a young woman's honor may depend upon recognition that she is a 'good' girl which has ramifications for arranged marriage and the family's reputation, the quality of partner they can secure, the size of a dowry, the reflection upon the honor of any siblings and so, again, everyone's future.
It would take courage to stand up against an established male in a position of importance - and to not be believed and seen as a troublemaker, liar, slut etc would be devastating.
