College Student Commits Self-Immolation After Sexual Harassment Claim Inaction
Balasore, Odisha, India. Thanks to KC for additions. A 20-year-old college student, Somyashree B., who was pursuing a college degree, committed self-immolation due to inaction over sexual harassment complaints she had made against a professor. Somyashree suffered severe burns over 90% of her body. She received all possible intensive care in the state capital of Bhubaneswar - including mechanical ventilation, IV support, antibiotics, and renal therapy - but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Somyashree had been mentally distressed for weeks due to alleged persistent harassment from her professor. The professor allegedly made repeated inappropriate demands and threatened her with academic consequences if she refused to comply. Despite reportedly submitting formal complaints to both the college principal and the local police, no substantial action was taken. Students said that although an internal committee was formed, it made little progress. The college principal was arrested after Somyashree's self-immolation.   |
